Arizona Chickens

What makes you guess Mid-April? We have some that hatched in September, and I can't wait for them to start laying. We only have 2 layers, and they aren't so good. We get about 6 eggs a week, and that isn't enough for a family of 7. I am tired of buying 2 dozen cage free eggs a week and then going home and feeding our 7 chickens!

Well, they were 7 weeks Jan 1st when I got them, so they'll be 20 weeks April 15th...Isn't that average point of lay? I hope?

You know I have a Soapers group that meets monthly for coffee and chat, I'd just love to have a local BYC group that does the same. Hmmm. If you're interested, PM me. Evening or weekend morning is when I have coverage...this could be just too much fun.

Oh, I hope so! I think mine hatched somewhere around Sept. 20th. That means I should expect eggs anytime, right? I wonder if the time of year matters.

Congrats to everyone on the chicks!!! How exciting! The pics were so cute. They are adorable, but their big ol' feet look so funny. It makes me really want some chicks again.

ca, that is great that you're making a feeder! Could you follow my instructions? Oh, I wish I knew you were doing that, I'd like to know EXACTLY were the instructions were hard to follow (I'm sure there are many points). As far as I know, you're the first to build one. I can't wait to see pics! BTW, I'm much more impressed with functionality than appearance in a coop. What impresses me even more is when someone takes on a task like building a coop when they've never built anything before. I guess I'm a terrible enabler in that respect.

pdx2phx, my chickens do that too! If they get onto our back patio area, they sit at the sliding glass door and stare into the house. Sometimes they'll peck at the glass just to get our attention.

AZBootsie, CUTE chicks!

azwelshponygirl, first of all,

and welcome to our AZ thread! I'm so sorry about your first story. That must have been heartbreaking. We buried a wire apron around the base of the coop/run so that it makes it much more difficult for diggers to get inside. Here are a couple pics of how we did it:

Good Morning,
Thanks for the picture of the wire, thats actually what my husband was doing all day, yesterday.
We only have two pens that needed it,one was a 12 x24 stall in my mare motel, the other our goose pen by the arena.
I have three other coops that are totally covered and we had put a foundation of buried cinder blocks on those-that worked great.
You could see where they tried, but no luck to them.
It is very sad to raise them up from eggs and have them slaughtered like that!
I wouldn't feel quite so bad if they had eaten them, because they were starving!!

That's the same way I feel about it. The coyotes were here first. They kill ONE and eat it. There is a leash law in Maricopa county that says your dog must stay on YOUR property or be on a leash, but when they get out they kill as many as they can for fun. The same applies to the other predators (ie:they kill what they eat). I don't like it, it drives me crazy, breaks my heart and makes me sick when it's a favorite or a pet, but I do understand it.

NoSkiveez, Congrats on the great hatch!

To all the new chicken herders!

And congratulations to all the new chickies hatched.

Everybody ready for the rain?

Gallo, I am sorry but I make a lousy guinea pig. I LOVE building this stuff so much that I never read instructions

. I just took the measurements off of your (nicely drawn to scale!) drawings. I was actually missing a dimension but I counted squares

. I'll read the instructions afterwards that way I can tell you what mistakes people should NOT make when building without properly reading instructions. I am busy right now doing necessary stuff (that list NEVER gets smaller!). But I'll take a pic when I am finished.
