No snow here...just a lot of rain last night. Good thing we fixed sprinklers, watered plants and added water to the pond last night

He looks a little better now. Believe it or not, he was still doing his business. The poor hens were cold and wet, but he wasn't giving them a break.

So, I guess fixing sprinklers and the like is the equivalent of washing your car to bring on the rain? If you are like me, you should have saved your energy for the massive amount of energy that will now be spent cleaning mud off of floors.

WE GOT OUR FIRST PULLET BULLET TODAY!!!! Thanks for the cool term, Laree. It was the same size as our little silkie's egg, but blue. It looked a little dingy and had a few spots. I am guessing they will get prettier later on. I was doing dishes when I heard my daughter squealing. I looked out the window and she was standing in the coop clapping her hands, and I knew instantly what it was. We have been waiting for this day. We are so proud!

Here is the new egg with a silkie egg and a regular one:

No snow at my house, except in the air this afternoon as Gallo mentioned. TT - LOVE the snowperson on the cholla! Good of you to help out the rabbit.

I just finished covering the garden areas. What a pain. Very nice to have the moisture though.

5pinkarrows - now there is a real reason for congratulations, nice egg!

So My last post was in September and I've only checked in a couple times, this post moves too fast to even try to keep up. It's cool to see so many new faces, welcome. It's also cool to see the regulars but it looks like a couple peeps are missing (laree and sockpuppet come to mind right away).

In my little chicken world we've had some losses and some additions. Two that everyone swore were pullets started crowing, one got aggressive (Jumbo Jett) and found himself comfortable in BBQ sauce the other has been give a stay of execution. His name is Hermaphrochicken because for the longest time he looked like a roo but sure didn't act like one. Bacon the ancona Phylis the Delaware and Miss Basil Blue the super awesome cochin have all died and I 've come to realize that if you're going to have chickens you're going to have some die. The dogs are co mingling harmoniously with the chickens again so that is a good thing. From the four remaining hens (Buffy, Right Said Red, Larry and Rough) that I have I've been getting three to four eggs a day without fail and in the beginning of November I brought home eight pullets (hopefully) that should start laying this spring. The newcomers are RIR BR and Del's.

The kids are very taxing these day and they make me wish I had a clone. We're still looking for an acre to move to, everything we've been seeing in our price range has been out in Queen Creek and it's so far from my work that we're hesitant but I think we will probably bite the bullet soon.

That's all for now, I'll try to be around more it was good stopping in.

Joel

This thread really moves along.

WE got a nice storm last night... garden looks great.

Chicken run... MUDDY.

JOEL... so sad to hear about BACON and your other losses.

Joel, I love the names of your chickens. That cracked me up about the rooster being comfortable in BBQ sauce.

I have come to the same realization about having chickens means losing chickens. I try to remind my kids of that often since they get sooooo attached. We haven't lost any since September and they have gotten especially close to the ones we have now.

If you think this thread moves fast, you should check out Mahonri's hatch thread. I tried, but couldn't keep up.

I've found wrapping each egg in half a premium paper towel then packing into a egg crate. When I send 15 eggs, i use an 18 pack and trim the end 3 off in the smaller flat rate box. I wrap the egg crate in bubbly wrap and I use shredded paper to stuff the box. I then fill any loose spaces with new pine shavings. I've had two 30 packs of eggs make it to Alaska and all over the lower 48. I have had two boxes get damaged and those where at Christmas and I had a feeling they would with all the extra mail. I won't ship at the holidays again because I think the damage was a result of the added volume.

Today I put down about 100 quail and I had a resistant quail that had to be put down with my hands. It was no where near as hard as I expected it to be. I may give up the "Gas Chamber" method altogether. This is neat, quick and less extensive than gassing them. Tomorrow will be another busy day with quail. All need to be weighted. This week some eggs should be arriving.
