Any tricks to getting the chickens to lay their cargo in the comfy, soft nests and not on the cold, hard, dusty ground?

When mine started laying they would lay anywhere they wanted. Usually directly under the hanging food dispenser

. I read on here somewhere about putting golf balls in the nesting box to teach them. That worked really well, but they have become dependant on it. I have tried taking it out a few times, but the very next day I will start finding eggs in random places (usually somewhere very difficult for me to reach). As soon as I put it back, they go right to the box again. So I decided that the ball can just live in the nesting box. I know most people do not have this problem, but mine just happen to be weird. You might try it.

I thought you just had chicks?

That newspaper article is something else! I can't believe chickens can survive like that. I would love it if some chickens just wandered up one day.

Arizonadreamer-- I don't know enough about the breeds to say what you have. I have a mystery red chicken, too. I assume she is RIR cross, but who knows? She lays nice light brown eggs.

nurseronda-- I am not a little dog person, but that little guy is SOOOO cute!!!

The heat is on the way.

nurseronda, I also used golf balls in the nest boxes. All my chickens laid in their nest boxes, except one. The lowest ranking bird laid her first couple eggs hidden in my bean plants.

I am now the proud owner of 2 adult chickens as of yesterday. I had read about that trick, but I used plastic eggs. The first egg laid was in the nest. I thought they knew what to do so I took the plastic eggs out. Guess I will take your advice and put them back in the nests and see if that remedies the problem. Thanks.

Mahonri directed me down a street near his house & there was tons of chickens & guineas all over just running all over it was crazy!!
