NOt exactly.

Tomatoes and Potatoes are from the nightshade family. The plants themselves are posionous to everyone--including chickens. The fruits and tubers produced by tomato are NOT poisonous to chickens.

However- for a long time people thought tomato fruit were poisonous, because only the rich could afford them, and they would die after eating them. When the poor ate them, they had no adverse effects. What they figured out was, the gentry were eating tomatoes off of the old-type peweter plates. The acids in the tomato would react to the peweter---giving the eater lead(?) poisoning. The poor had wooden or clay plates.

I went outside to move the hose today and I guess I didn't get the door closed all the way.
I came back in to Daisy (Leghorn) exploring the kitchen. The dog was watching her with a quizzical expression.
