Arizona Chickens

So DD Emmy is looking forward to hatch date, next Monday. I asked her if she wanted to keep doing it, she gave me a resounding big YES! Another businesswoman created. DS was never this ambitous, wonder why that is?

Meanwhile, the leftover FBCM (renamed Lucky due to an unfortunate encounter with middle DD who has some "special" behavior issues) is spoiled but thriving. I'm not sure Lucky will ever leave home, and certainly not if we get to rename her LADY Luck in a few weeks. Meanwhile, padlocks have come out on all things living and feathered.

Any hints on the early sexing of BCM's would be greatly appreciated.

Now to work. Really.

It is the same as giving them Rooster Booster or electrolytes. I tell people with weak chicks to give them gatorade or sugar water if they dont have any electrolytes on hand.

You don't want to replace water with gatorade though. Too much salt is hard on the little chicken kidneys. It should be in addition to a trough of water, not instead of.

During the heat of summer I use the electrolytes you buy at the feed store for chickens. I use it every other fill in the waterer. It cost $9 for a pack of powder that makes 35 gallons. Don't mix it too strong because then they won't drink it.

I got my first egg from the New Years Hatch chickens today!

Also I heard crowing from the petting chicken pen. Turns out that both of the black frizzels I have are roos. Would anyone like to have a couple black frizzle roos (that don't seam to have the frizzle trait). They are real docile/cowards. They run into the hutch every time I go near them. I tried intergrating them into the young flock pen but my SLWs were having none of that and attacked them to the point I had to rescue them. They are free to anyone on this site. Otherwise I'll just Craigslist them.

I believe the optimal storage temperature for hatching eggs is something like 50 degrees, and the embryos can grow a little with temps above 70 or something, according to Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens.

Most folks' kitchen fridges are in the 35-40 degree range, but I for one have a separate "ag fridge" that could be set to a higher temp.

I don't think 35-40 degrees would be that harmful, but 32 or lower certainly would.

Gatorade is electrolytes (plus sugar and flavouring). A vet told me that gatorade is excellent when the birds need electrolytes especially as one if far more likely to have it on hand than electrolytes. Add to that that it is better flavoured, and the birds are more likely to drink it (in my experience). If you ever experience heat stroke with your birds, they definitely NEED electrolytes in one form or another until they have fully recovered, and for about a week afterwards.

Coffee on Saturday sounds good I will be there. Does anyone thats coming have any eggs they would sale to eat not hatch? I look forward to meetign some of you.

The West Valley number (Pam) is the person I got my two hens that turned out to be roosters. She did give me some chicks to replace them that are supposed to be sexed and pullets. Time will tell. She is really super nice, just hope they are really pullets since it will be a long time before I know for sure. They are 3 1/2 weeks old right now. I don't have room for both, so when they are about 20 weeks old and I'm sure they are both girls, I will be looking for a home for the extra blue Ameraucana. Trying to keep my large hen number at 6 - LOL!
I think the East Valley person is the lady (one of Pam's friends) who took Gabby from me when she turned out to be a boy because she was also breeding blue Ameraucanas (and black and splash), and also had some that were half Australorp to breed some size into them, just like Pam does. I have not bought any chicks from her.

Stinks when you think you have pullets and end up with roos!
Happily mine is really good about not trying to pet chicks or hold chickens without one of us there.
Unhappily it is my turn for barfing/diarrhea kid
