So, I'm a sucker for helpless animals ... and I guess helpless eggs too! There was a lady who posted on Craigslist that she had free hatching eggs, that were about to hatch. So, I called and talked to her and I guess she had a hen that hatched some chicks and the other hens killed them all. She didn't have anywhere to segregate the broody hens, so she decided to either give them away, or if nobody wanted them, destroy them. So, brought home 16 white eggs and 12 brown eggs - supposed to be Wyandotte, RIR and Black Sex Link. Not sure who the white egg layer is though, really big white eggs. I think all of the breeds she mentioned have brown eggs. I'll have to call and ask. I did a candle when I got home and discarded clears. Some looked close to hatching and others not so much. So, imagine my surprise when I came home from work to chirping in the bator!
One of the whites is starting to zip. So, I candled all of the whites again and they all look ready to hatch (I wasn't going by color yesterday because they were all jumbled together). The browns all look about half grown and are moving well. So we'll see! Oh, LOL I had no idea how to move them to bring them home, but I put a bed buddy hot pack in the bottom of a box, then a blanket over it, put the eggs in and then wrapped the blanket over them all.
Also, my next batch of seramas are all pipping - so the bator will be really, really full! And STINK, my DH and I both have to work tomorrow!!! Maybe they will ALL hatch while we are sleeping - so much better than while at work
