Arizona Chickens

So, I'm a sucker for helpless animals ... and I guess helpless eggs too! There was a lady who posted on Craigslist that she had free hatching eggs, that were about to hatch. So, I called and talked to her and I guess she had a hen that hatched some chicks and the other hens killed them all. She didn't have anywhere to segregate the broody hens, so she decided to either give them away, or if nobody wanted them, destroy them. So, brought home 16 white eggs and 12 brown eggs - supposed to be Wyandotte, RIR and Black Sex Link. Not sure who the white egg layer is though, really big white eggs. I think all of the breeds she mentioned have brown eggs. I'll have to call and ask. I did a candle when I got home and discarded clears. Some looked close to hatching and others not so much. So, imagine my surprise when I came home from work to chirping in the bator!

One of the whites is starting to zip. So, I candled all of the whites again and they all look ready to hatch (I wasn't going by color yesterday because they were all jumbled together). The browns all look about half grown and are moving well. So we'll see! Oh, LOL I had no idea how to move them to bring them home, but I put a bed buddy hot pack in the bottom of a box, then a blanket over it, put the eggs in and then wrapped the blanket over them all.
Also, my next batch of seramas are all pipping - so the bator will be really, really full! And STINK, my DH and I both have to work tomorrow!!! Maybe they will ALL hatch while we are sleeping - so much better than while at work

Yea! Tomorrow we get 'em! Today the 2 week old Wheaton Americaunas go into the hutch brooder in the garage. They are already fluttering out of the bin brooder. And waking Emmy up at the crack of dawn.

I got the most beautiful pair of leghorns from a pack of Trader Joe's fertile eggs... I was going to give them away but they are the coolest pair and I cannot part with them

. Those eggs are cheap though... and hatching is fun...

The effort you put into hatching TJ's fertile eggs! I just want to improve my hatch rate so I am not tempted with that. How many did you set, and how many hatched?

Effort? Go shopping, put in incubator, wait, wait, wait... no different than with bought eggs. Except you should not have any that are broken on arrival! And the wait is much less dramatic because you did not spend a lot of money for the eggs and the shipping...
Ok, The eggs were 3 weeks old (!), I hatched a surprising two from a whole dozend. And these are proven super-vigorous chickens

Here they are at about 7 weeks. I am currently integrating them into my flock (now about 11 week old) - which goes surpsisingly well considering I have two adult roosters and then this little gem.

Hi All! I was a member before, but for the life of my couldn't figure out how to log back in so I am a newbie again, LOL! We live in the East Mesa area. I have been searching high and low for silkies and can't seem to find any around here. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
