Arizona Chickens

Is anyone interrested in two dark brahma hens that are 14 months old? I am looking to sell them, no bites on CL, one of them is as broody as all get out and she IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She just hatched out chicks a few weeks ago(which I took away after she broke one of their beaks) and she is STILL broody. I can't take it!!

They do need to go together, they are buds. I love dark brahmas but I am soooooo over broodies for the moment. I have had 3 back to back since march and she brooded twice for me. Plus, dh says I need to trim the flock down. Send me a PM if you'd like Betty and Bernice.

Mahonri:

One more pip, one slowly zipping. I think the zipper is W/BWA, not sure about the pipper. I have hopes for the rest of 'em, maybe they're just slower. This time they get DAYS to try, I'm not very good at candling.

I was going to mark the EE in the brown egg when it hatched but she must not have liked that idea as she arrived in the night.
The three dark ones (so far): Two are blue gray with clean legs. The other looks just like a Marans and has a feathered toe one each foot. Stinkin' cute they all are.

Pip expired in the shell. Don't know what went wrong as he was very vocal. Went in an hour later and some resin looking stuff, clear with bubbles had dripped out and hardened and he was a goner. Zipper wasn't progressing although the shell was zipped all around. Kinda stuck in a corner so I moved her a bit to give her more room. She rolled back into the corner so I helped her out because I saw some fuzz and was afraid of her drying out. She's a W/BWA. Humidity 50 percent or better.

New pip too. Yea! That's 7 out.

Bryan, I just saw the local news. I'm so sorry.

The news showed people driving into the evacuation zone and rescuing animals that were left behind; it was so heartbreaking. I don't really have a way to hold animals here and I only have my small truck so I don't know how useful I could be. But if it comes to you having to evacuate, I'll come help. Just let me know.

X 2 Bryan! I am in the same situation as Gallo, however. We can push our legal limit of birds if we need to, but we are technically already there at the moment. I don't know what you have, but we could rig something up here, and I think we could convince one or two of our neighbors to help out with temporary poultry housing in a pinch, and I know a couple of other people who could be counted on for temporary housing, too. I also only have a small truck with a camper shell, so I could move birds, dogs, cats, and possibly goats depending on the size. Email me if you or a neighbor need some help.

Bryan - I sent you a PM with a phone #, call if needed.

Up to 8 now.

Bryan,
We're in mid-town Tucson and could probably accommodate 6 - 8 more chickens (I'm sure our neighbors would love us

) for a little while. It'll take some jimmy-rigging. I'll ask neighbors too and see if anyone else can. Will call Ann.

Gallo,
Yes, on the purslane seeds. That would be wonderful. Thank you. We have lots of beetles rather than worms right now too.

Our big news: We have a broody on eggs right now and the first (only?) one hatched this morning. It is a Partridge Penedesenca. Of course, now I'm all of a twitter. How do I make sure it gets enough water, food? Mama, chick and eggs are in a nesting box in a separate coop with burlap over the wire top. I've been wetting the burlap down multiple times a day to help cool (it is in the shade as well), but what should I be doing? All this reading is great, but unless it is focused on the desert, I feel it is fairly useless.

Mama will usually remain onhte eggs for about three days to give all the eggs time to hatch. Add a quart or pint sized quail aka no-drown waterer where the chicks and mama can get to it. Sprinkle some chick crumbles within read of both mama & babies. A fan and/or mister can help, just be sure to not let the mister run so long that they get wet--especially baby.
