Arizona Chickens

Time to get rid of some roosters. Anyone want roosters for processing, or just to have around for the constant noise and harassing of the hens? I have probably 15 to 20 that I need to get rid of. pm me if you are interested.

re: cooling, I use a 3500 cfm evap cooler in the coop, that also cools a little bit outside in the run and the front door, then I have drip irrigation line about 6' high that runs around the run, both coops, and around the raised bed gardens and the patio. I don't run the garden and patio all the time due to the minerals coating everything. I bought the low pressure, adjustable flow misters for drip systems at Lowes, they are about $3 for 5 emitters that you can punch into the drip line wherever you want one. We don't have great water pressure here, so I don't worry about too much pressure in the line, but you can just adjust it with the faucet if need be. So, with all that, and 9 or 10 water dishes, mud, and wading pools, only the chickens that are too silly to come in out of the heat have problems. I think I've lost one or two to heat so far, which, all things considered isn't bad.

I'm sorry to hear about the losses out there. you know, you can lead a chicken to water, but you just can't make it do calculus.

Bob, how are they with Algebra ?

I am interested! I have made lye based soap for years. Interested in the milk based soap.

Hi everyone I have been MIA for awhile. Our beautiful English Mastiff had a stroke and died April 25. I have been in a funk ever since. I also have a gardne plot that I rented out at Agritopia and my tomatoes have been keeping me busy canning and canning and more canning. They are slowing down a bit so I am glad about that.

I do have four Chickens now! I have had them about two months. No one in the "hood" is wise to them. I have my coop hidden back in a bunch of bamboo.. So I have one RI{R, two Ameracanas and one Barrred Rock. I can not wait for eggs!

I bought one of the portable misters several years ago at Home Depot.....it is made out of green swirled PVC and I put in in the coop yesterday for the first time. I put it on a timer and it turns on at 1:00 Pm and runs until 4:00PM. My coop is very basic but is seems to work with lots of all flow.

We also have scorpions so the info about them is interesting. I was going to post a picture of my coop and the mister but I can not figure out how to do that.

Yikes how big are your rats? Give me a scorp any time LOL...I can step on them or hit them with a hammer.

I was reading the paper outside last week when I saw a huge black cat coming over the wall right about my chicks.....I was up in a flash and scared him away. I suppose he will be back unless I can take care of him first!

Roos Round 2 - same age and info as the first round from yesterday: 9 weeks old, vaccinated for Mareks, friendly, healthy, etc.

If anyone is interested in these guys to add to your breeders, please let me know (PM or email), otherwise we'll eat them. I do have one black female each of the Ameraucana and Olive Egger that could be paired with the blues for breeding more blues.

Info about their breeding can be found here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=457562

Black Ameraucana

Blue Olive Egger

Blue Ameraucana

Black Olive Egger "Handsome" - One of our favorites. I'll try to add a better picture later today.

It has been 24 hours since our hen got stung. She is still not standing on her own. I wonder if I should have re-administered the Benedryl. I guess she will pull through. Don't think she is eating much if anything, but she is drinking lots of water. Hope she makes it through the night.

Interesting, hu? People who get stung report stinging, numbness at the sting site and beyond as well as numbness of the tongue. I can imagine that poison being strong enough to numb a whole chicken. Poor thing. Wonder if she will ever eat a scorpion again?

Yikes! I hope she comes out of it okay! I usually don't see more than one or two scorpions a year, but we've found lots of them this year. I'm not sure why there are so many now.

Smiles-N-Sunshine - Are you still hanging in there? Everytime I hear news of the fire I worry. Please let me know if I can do anything. I don't really have the space to foster enough to make a difference, but I can haul birds to and fro, or just help you tend to all your new additions if you need.

Also, has anyone heard from 5pinkarrows lately? I thought the Rio Rico area was threatened as well, and it seems like she hasn't been on for a while.
