btw, did you hear me screaming yesterday around 5pm all the way in mesa? i moved a bucket and there were 4 roaches (ew, i just got chicken skin) i started screaming at the top of my lungs and ran and got a delaware. like i'm going to kill them, gross! it became something so disgusting i can't get the images out of my mind. phobia, YES!!!!!!

Oh I know what you mean about roaches! We've been having a problem with those big ole sewer roaches coming up our shower drain. We had seen a few in the bathroom, which my husband to to get, of course, yuck! I woke up one night with one on my back. I had no choice but to grab the thing and throw it across the room! I couldn't sleep the rest of the night! I still get the creeps when I think about it!

I have a delaware that is driving me insane!

She also decided to hatch eggs but I decided to not let her sit around in the heat and do nothing. I keep throwing her out of the coop but her newest hobby is to sit on top of her fellow hens when they are trying to lay eggs. As if it was not hot enough and tight in the nest boxes already! I am going to have to do a search in the forum to see if somebody has a miracle cure to get her back to normal before she squishes an egg AND the laying hen. (I had no idea hens were that patient! Why don't they just kick her out? It can't be that comfortable being stuck under a pile of fluff! Is there such a thing as an Alpha hen?)

Broodies: My broody BR (who really does need a break from laying) is sitting on 8 or 10 TJ's fertile eggs. I didn't want to take anyone's "real" eggs since we didn't know how things would go. Plus, I really DON'T need more chickens. I have no idea what I am doing, I've never hatched eggs, but I'm excited to learn and watch things progress!

Seed Bank: Yippee! What fun. Tracydr, I may have some milkweed seeds I collected on the UA campus in my office somewhere. If they are still there, I'll throw them in. I like the idea of purging my seeds, too. I'll add in a variety of herbs, veggies, flowers, some expired, but still should have viable seeds, some I collected here and there while hiking, some seeds from neighbors, etc. I also can't wait to see what is in there when it comes back around! I may also have a stash of small envelopes and baggies in my office left over from old research that I can add.

Phobias: Ooh, sounds bad.

Sorry for you all. dofnup, you might be able to get teeny tiny parasitic wasps to release that will kill the caterpillars before they become moths and butterflies. The wasps really are small and harmless, but they lay their eggs in or on the caterpillar, which then gets eaten by the developing larvae. You can find information about them, and order them, online.

for your broody hen they say to pen her up in a dark place for several days....I don't like that idea. Someone else on here get a bucket with ice water and puts them in it for a while. They don't dunk them the just put at least the bottom half in and it helps change the body temp so they don't think they need to go broody any more. Let me know how it works I haven't tried either.
