It all depends. I usually throw the little ones out there starting at 10 to 12 weeks but they have an area where the big ones can't go (narrow opening) and where keep their food. None of my groups have acted the same. My current batch of youngsters seems very adventurous and has figured out exactly how close to get to the adults so they won't be attacked. My two adult roosters are very patient thankfully. I had batches before that were much more skiddish and afraid of the big ones for ever. All depends on the breed, number of chicks, and the behavior of the group as a whole.
I always make sure there is food, water and shade available in several places so there is no competition.
I think as long as they have a place to go for all their needs your little ones will be ok. The adults should get tired quickly of running after them.
