Arizona Chickens

I bet you a brazilian dollars that the bag of DE that you bought at Home Depot is POOL GRADE. Don't use that crap around your chickens!

It HAS to say "Codex Food Chemical Grade" on the package. The "Food Grade" can be eaten as a dietary supplement and is completely safe (except for the dust, it's never good to breathe dust).

The "Pool Grade" has been treated with chemicals and heat. The heat changes it into crystalline silica. That stuff is nasty and causes cancer. Aside from that, there aren't as many regulations when it comes to Pool Grade. It is more likely to be contaminated with heavy metals.

ALSO the retards that work at Home Depot will happily tell you that the Pool Grade DE is the same as the Food Grade DE. Do you really trust their opinion? Pool Grade DE should only be used in Pool Filters.

http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient.php?ingred06=705472 (more about crystalline silica)
http://www.ghorganics.com/DiatomaceousEarth.html (more about DE)
http://absorbentproductsltd.wordpre...s-pool-grade-diatomaceous-earth-the-dl-on-de/ (even more about DE)

Both Home Depot and Lowes carry DE in the pesticide section. It is NOT pool grade, but it may or may not be Food Grade. However, it is the same unheated variety used for food grade. It is listed as an organic pest contol product, certified by OMRI. Read package labels.

Ha ha ha!!! Went to get parts for another nipple waterer today. The guy who was "helping" me got called away, passed me on to someone else who promptly negated EVERYTHING the first guy said and started showing me other stuff. I had to derail him and show him what I wanted, I've already built and re-built the system.

Go in often enough, and you can figure out which employees know their stuff (some of htem really DO know their stuff) and which ones do not. Not all of them are ignorant, but the ones who are sure seem to take the cake!

Perhaps a dumb question: why can't the pullets go in with the hens yet?

Anne.

Until the younger ones are the same size as the bigger ones, they'll get picked on way too much. If the run was larger, maybe it wouldn't be such an issue. The whole "establishing a pecking order" can be quite cruel if not done at the appropriate time. Now, I've never had to integrate two flocks before, so I'm just going off of my own research. Everything I have read thus far recommends to wait until the yonger ones are the same size as the older. I tried putting them all together the other day. The Buff Orpington hen didn't pay any attention to the 4 younger ones, but my Production Red was on the hunt. She was downright mean, grabbing them by the feathers on their necks and pulling out tail feathers. She just wouldn't leave them alone. Even when they all free range together she will chase them a bit, but there's so many places they can go, she doesn't persue them. I think it would be easier to start your flock all at the same age. See what the other, more experienced chicken people have to say! I know I'm ready to move the 4 young ones off my patio!

The real danger (as always) is the ignorant ones who don't know they're ignorant.

"Ignorance I can fix, stupidity is forever."

That being said, I know 3 of the good ones at the Crismon Rd. Homer and try ti hit them up exclusively.

Tis true, guess I didn't give enough credit, I am mostly referring to the plumbing sections of the ones by my house and there is one employee who is correct most of the time. I actually know the store better than most of them do, guess I'm in there way to often!( Wife would second that)

Lets see if I remember all the ?s. Coop is a 4x8 wood shed built for dual purpose ( chickens and storing stuff later) run is about 5x 40' although they free range in my small backyard all day. It's about 30' from my house and in the corner furthest from any neighbors windows. Coop floor is lenollium and the run is grass or dirt depending on the season. I have 13 hens with 3 nesting boxes but they almost always lay in the same box. We use about a 50 lb bag of layer every 2 weeks. The kids and there neighbor friends collect eggs constantly, never more then a day goes by. The coop gets cleaned probably once a month, takes about 20 min and is usually done by my wife. Shes Awesome! If I could change anything I guess it would be to plan for more like what was said on here earlier.
