Dear Control Tower,
please allow me to explain some of the chicken accounting here.
If Reward - expenses = negative: hobby is "expensive"
If Reward - expenses = positive: hobby is "priceless"
You can gauge that by observing the satisfaction and joyous mood the involved person is expressing while occupied with the hobby.
Is it not wonderful to see somebody happy about a 20 gram piece of self propelled fluff? You surely would support that, wouldn't you?
Your coop is so nummy (only a chicken person could call a chicken housing project nummy). Tell control tower, tell her...tell her whatever you've discovered over the years to tell her on occasions like this! You must have something!

Gather the cost of other hobbies: golf, car racing, even joining a gym such as Lifetime Fitness, etc., and you will be able to show her it is MUCH less expensive.

Mikey- Expense is relative. (insert mastercard comercial). Coop is coming along great. You have a beautiful family, very cool that they all came to help you. But honestly, you will need more chickens if you plan on keeping them all in fresh eggs!!
Memphis- I pictured you living behind the Point on 7th street?? Figured NM was North Mountian. That is a really scenic area by the border. Very pretty!! Looks like this thread really does cover all of AZ from corner to corner.
Tracydr.- Yes!! I think your 20% flock raiser type feed is the perfect choice. How long can you store feed for?? I don't think I have ever bought more than a months worth at one time. I looked for info on a buckeye mill and couln't find anything either. If you find something center state, maybe us outlaying areas can group together for feed pickup. I have a truck and time, can pick up for the Wickenburg area. Sounds like you have plenty of help in Phx, but if you need more trucks to load at the mill, just let me know.
PastryMama- How many chickens do you have??
Southerndesert- Sounds like you had a great hatch!! Adorable babies. Keeping my fingers crossed for late pippers and stragglers.
My Penelope hatched another chick. Found it in the nest, and her off with the 2 day olds feeding. Thought it was dead (not breathing at all). I pulled it out and set it on top of the nesting box, to finish some chores. The Sunshine must have warmed it up. It was breathing when I picked it up to dispose of it. Resilient litte bugger warmed up nicely and looks good now. Eating and Drinking...bouncing around. I am not into brooding a single chick, so going to try and put it back with Momma this afternoon.
Her unhatched eggs were cold too, so I pulled them out. The broody's nest was like a magnet for a few of my other hens. They flew over and dug under wire to lay their eggs in her nest. I didn't realize it for about a week and marked her eggs then. So she has a staggered hatch. Yesterday I candled the left over eggs and looks like some may still be alive. I threw them in the incubator, because I feel guiilty letting them die. It WAS really nice not having any chicks in the house......... oh well.

I feel for ya. My #1 ( and only, so far) spent the night with us and was up with the chickens! ( Mommy and Daddy were celebrating their 3rd anniversary)
