I will do mealworms after pastrymama has had them a year.

Not because they gross me out, but because eventually her fireman will get tired of taking care of them for her. (gag reflex) Then he'll make her get rid of them, cave on the turkeys, and all will be sunshine and lollipops.

The law changed this year--basically so that folks in a residential area in the middle of nowhere can protect themselves from rampaging javelinas. You'll need to look it up for the specifics, though.

F&G told me no way, no how and that it was my responsibility to make our property "Pig Proof" to avoid confrontation or face fines for taking matters into my own hands. They said under extreme conditions they will come trap them, but they can not be relocated so they kill them due to their territorial and family group nature.

southerndesert, Jeez, it seems that it would be worth the man-hours to put someone on finding the family that the rabid animal came from. One would have to wonder if others in the group are also infected. Or is rabies so common out there among javalina that it's not unusual? It just seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

Mikey D, Those seem like fairly decent prices for mealworms to me. I've grown both and they each have their pros and cons. If you're just raising for chickens, then standard mealworms are probably the way to go. I think they produce more biomass per unit time than do the super worms. Super worms also require more work. You have to individually separate the larvae at a certain age to get them to pupate and prevent the pupae from being cannibalized by the others. Sometimes this work is worth it, depending on the animal to which you're going to feed them. They are a pretty huge meat snack for anything that can swallow it. I would also only buy super worms from a reputable dealer so that you know you're getting Zophobus morio and not Tenbrio molitor treated with Juvenile Hormone.

Big time fine for using other methods including pellet gun therapy.

Now it is two months later and someone is injured and they have shot one of the Javelina anyway....

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. I'll bet that if you feel your life is being threatened/imminent danger etc. you might be able to protect yourself, but probably can't do anything to protect property, pets, and livestock. Just my guess. We love out chickens, I had the greatest cat for 13 years, so I'm not anti-animal/pet, but they are still just that, animals. How did we get to the point that animal life has equal or greater value than human life? Opps, my soapbox is starting to creak, may collapse, so I'd better get off it.

I don't know for sure, but I think the "super worms" are not good! There's been talk about super or giant, and i'm not sure which it is, but they are fed steroids. And do not re produce very well and take a long time. Now the coffee is brewing, so if i'm wrong, someone please correct me!!!!!!

I think to be safe, I would stick with regular ole meal worms.
