The fat rooster is in the fridge! He weighed , drum-roll, 11.95 pounds all naked and ready to bake. Well, actually, I'm going to brine him first.
So, he was probably like 16 pounds "on the hoof"!
I'm thinking cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing and mashed potatoes sometime this week for a little pre-New Year's Dinner. Will make sure we have some purple-eye peas and mustard greens for good luck.
Thinking this organic feed is working pretty well.
Maybe somebody stuck one of those "Midget White " turkeys in the order and I just didn't notice?

Western Ranchman has them for $60 a piece.

My husband made me a wooden treadle feeder and it worked good for a while, but now the sparrows have figured out how to eat when my hens eat - some still dash in and dine with the chickens every time a chicken steps on the treadle.

Also, the mice have chewed a small hole in the lid - just big enough for them to go in an out of -- so now I have mouse poop in the feeder (the mice dine at night).

Another problem we've had with my treadle feeder is that it sticks during the rainy season. The treadle is protected from the rain, but the humidity causes swelling in the wood, which means the lid doesn't open as easily (takes more than 1 hen to open it) and also stays open after the hens have eaten their fill. Hubby might be making me a new treadle and modifying it to take care of the mice and humidity issues, but I'm still not sure how to keep the birds away.
