I would suggest trying a higher protein feed (I use Purina Flock Raiser 20%) and/or supplements like mealworms. If you are feeding low-protein supplements like scratch grains, you could reduce or eliminate that also. (The more scratch they eat, the less appetite they have for feed.)

Thank you. I will cut out scratch and be sure all treats I give them are high in protein. Any idea where I can get mealworms so I can start a colony? I will check their feed as well not sure what the % is and not sure if I can get anything else here(tiny tiny town). But I will find a way to get more protein in them. As far as yogurt, the kind I am giving them has 10g per serving is that good or not?

ETA-just checked layer feed it is 20% so its has to be because I have been giving them scratch as well as fruit/veggie scraps.

When you order you usually get some extra boys as packing peanuts, though, unless you are ordering a large number. I've had 30 "pullet" chicks so far over the past 3 years and only 2 mistakes(boys).
If you get them from a feed store, I would suggest finding out which day they come in and getting them that day so you can give them a good start.

I went over to Mikey's house earlier and picked up a roo. It was nice to meet him and his wife, and the boys loved the cotton candy machine

. I processed the roo right after dinner, and I was amazed at how nice and meaty his thighs were. I think I'm going to make him into soup tomorrow, I think that all that dark meat will make a beautiful broth.

kev, I may have a plumbing job for you in our bathroom. We did a remodel a few years ago and the system he put in our masterbath shower doesn't work very well... and now it's begun to leak. YIKES... DW is worried you'll have to remove a lot of stone etc...

I'm hoping you can work in small spaces.

Wow polybuteline is the worst, it's so bad I can't even spell it! They repiped it with that stuff, what was there before galvanized? The poly stuff became a class action lawsuit many years ago. There is a new system that is being sold at all your big box stores that before they changed the name was in the process of a lawsuit too.

Glad to hear things are looking up for others. Question for everyone, can a rooster's actions cause some sort of prolapse? One of our hens unwillingly was violated yesterday and I guess it's a prolapse.

I believe that there was copper before.

We built a 1680 sq/ft addition on when we got married - (she had 3 & I had three) - & many people tried to get us to use that plastic junque.

I'm a big fan of permanency.

So I go out to let out the cluckers & give them some treats - rice from My Big Fat Greek Restaurant.

I knew I should have brought the camera!

Max always come out with me and lately has been sharing some of the chicken treats.

I give Max the garlic bread to distract him from the rice & toss some rice to the chickens.

Max takes the bread about 3 feet from the rice & starts chow'n.

(You know where this is going)

One of the barred rocks follows the bread crumb trail,

& starts trying to peck the bread out of Max's mouth!

One of the funniest things I've seen lately!

Miki, you can get mealworms at pet stores that have reptile supplies, or online at places like Fluker Farms http://www.flukerfarms.com/mealworms.aspx I don't know how much you already know about raising mealworms - I really enjoy it personally. Definitely get the "regular" mealworms, not giants or superworms. This is a good time of year to have mealworms shipped, as they die quickly in hot weather.
