Arizona Chickens

Hi All- I have 4 two week old chicks in their brooder. They keep emptying the little mason jar feeder thats in their box. I am having to fill it up every day for the past 3 days, as it looks like all of the chick starter is in a pile next to the feeder or scattered around it. ANy suggestions on why they are doing this or how to prevent this from continuing? Thanx!

Yes, (I finally have something to contribute!!!)

Get one of these...

And while you are at it get a couple of nipples and make one of these...

So the chickies see this...

So when they get bigger you can make them one of these...

And hang it and plumb it like this...

So you don't have to water them twice a day!

Which brings me to my next post!

(How's that for a segue?)

Two items:

1. One Dot is squatting!!! Yay!! MamaChris, you were right on the mark!!!

2. I go's outside to check on the cluckers and what do I see? A large puddle under the waterer.

No, it was not last weeks repair, it was the float valve.

A word from the mildly experienced - don't buy the cheap float from Homer - get the next quality level up with the brass valve body - it shuts off more solidly than the one with the plastic body..

Additionally, the bucket which I figured would stay clean was hideous! (and smelled a tad yucky too!)

I wonder if the mother in the ACV (Look! I used an acronym!) Is turning the water into something else?

Cleaned out the bucket, unscrewed the nipples (not from the bucket - they separate for cleaning & the seal part stays in the bucket) & cleaned them for good measure too! Installed new valve with blue float (which hopefully will not take on water like the old one & flood the bucket & leak like the old one).

Gallo - we need to talk about waterers and pressure reducers!

I think it's about that age that they start scratching. Try raising it up so they can't scratch the feed out.

I am wondering if there are any Az people here that grow their own mealworms & sell them live or dried? If so, I was hoping to see how much for some. Can you PM how much it would cost for live or dried.

Thnx

We raise them for the lizard & chickens. I got them off of ebay, about $12 for a thousand. They arrived dead 2x but alive on the third. The seller did not charge for any of the subsequent shipments & was very dedicated to getting me the live worms.

If you want to raise your own I have about eight tenths of a bale of bran left over!

So who knows what causes consistant double yolkers?
I have an EE that has laid a double every other day, for about 9 days now.
I dont think its feed, as the other 14 eggs I got today, and each of the past days are normal.
previously I would get a double EE about once a month, and now its has been consistant every other day.. and I am pretty sure it is the same girl.
here are 3 of them with FBCM/BWA/Icelandic eggs for comparison.
Bryce- Maybe it is just the picture but it looks like the one in the middle is a different color so could be from a different hen. I don't think there is any reason for the double yolkers sometimes two yolks get released at the same time resulting in double yolkers. I think its kinda like when non-identical twins are born. And you are not alone, one of my EEs has been laying double yolkers every other day for a week now. Must be in the air.

Mikey, I noticed that the water in the plastic juice jar with the two nipples looked yellow. What is in there besides water? Should I be giving my 4 week old chicks a supplement or vitamin in their water? The feed store said no so I didn't add anything. They said I may want to add electrolytes to the water in the summer though
Thanks,
Allan

I have the last of my fertile hatching eggs available. Almost all are EEs. One is a purebred Wheaten Ameraucana.

At this point I'll sell them for $3. (there are a dozen)

... and I also can't guarantee how fertile they'll be. The roo's been gone for a week now.

Yay for onedot! I agree with your homer experience only I would take it a step further. Don't ever buy the cheapest one they carry from any of the box stores. Even the midgrade products have had things taken out and /or replaced to make them cost competitive.

OK so maybe you're not diamonds... (into ice = diamonds or cold weather?)

It's vitamins. now bear in mind that I've only got a 4 month lead time on you, this is my first chicken adventure.

5 months ago I split an order from Ideal hatchery with TracyDr and haven't looked back.

Tracy gave me a pouch of powdered vitamins & everyone else around here has been tutoring me through this.

Tracy should be on here relatively soon and we can find out were she got them. I'm going to have to as I just ordered another 10 chicks!

Ever hear of chicken math?
