Arizona Chickens

it's just you. i'm not keeping the quail!!!!!! but i have 9 new silkie babies, 2 of which are BUFF. beautiful BUFF BUFF BUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and my goose that lays golden eggs is due to arrive next tuesday MIKEY.

SILKIE BABIES! I die of the cute every time I look at my flock of silkies and they're in the awkward stage still.

my 4th grade had some onedonate some geese eggs. Holy huge! I had never seen them before. They are going to look really huge when I bring in serama eggs next week to incubate with them!

Bluebird- From what little knowledge I have corn is considered a hot food. It is ok in the cooler weather but in the dead heat of the summer it should be avoided. Corn is more difficult for a chicken to digest creating the use of more energy for digestion thus creating an increased internal body temperature. In the hot hot Az summers every little percaution we can take not to overhead our chickens is helpful. I am still throwing out some scratch for mine but will stop giving it to them once the temps hit about 90. I will then give them frozen treats like grapes and melons to help keep them cooler. Welcome to BYC! I hope I helped answer your question.

Corn is also not very nutritious compared with most other grains. It is common because it is CHEAP, not because it is healthy. I avoid corn as much as possible. I would NEVER give them cracked corn. I might SPARINGLY give fresh corn.

Mama hen chris- you are not having any luck. I am sorry. I had a serama that had one and it smelled really gross, so I knew it was sour crop, but it was no way as huge as yours. I have heard not to push the liquid up because it can go down the wrong tube and then they drown. Just fyi. Let us know how you do. you are just really luck to have a vet that will work with chickens.

Sour crop, pendulous crop and impacted crop are all separate maladies--NOT the same thing. In impacted crop there is usually a blockage that prevents the crop from emptying. In pendulous crop, digestion is slow--usually due to issues further along in the digestive system. Sour crop indicates an infection such as thrush, often in the crop, but sometimes elsewhere in the digestive system.

You can't do this to me!

I'm just about to put the 4 week old's outside under a heat lamp!

That'll leave me with only 7 chicks and only one brooder.

Do you see what I'm dealing with?

They were sleeping...

These are the wee ones...

Sorry about the sideways picts.

Here is one of the female "Spitz-n-peepers"!

They are so stink'n cute!

Mom'll kill me if I get new peepers.

(When will they hatch?)

Mikey- They are cute. I am glad I have 4! and your wife will really change your sleeping arrangements to the shed if you are hatching out your own chicks.....but you should give into peer pressure because it is really awesome to watch them hatch. you could say it was an experiement for work....or you want the grandkids to experience the miracle of life....or you are saving money by not having to order your own day old chicks.....or you are making money by selling the chicks on craigslist, so it is an investment.
