Arizona Chickens

Anyone ever had to deal with impacted crop? My GLW Francesca is impacted. I noticed a week ago that her crop was huge and it felt like a rock. I gave her olive oil and massaged it a couple times a day. I got it broken down but she wasn't passing anything out the other end. Wasn't getting any better, so off to the vet. It was very large and hanging over her keel. ( won't empty when this large) He made her a "bra" to lift her crop higher than her keel. Anyhow, after two days, it didn't get better, so off to the vet for the day. He tried to have her regurgitate but she wasn't having that, so he tubed her with 40cc of warm water than massage and then got some liquid out of her. He tested that for infection which she does not have. No sour crop either. Anyhow, I learned how to tube her and flush her. I have to do this 2x a day. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I CAN DO THIS!!! I actually got some grass out of her today! yeah. Sunday, the vet tech is coming over to my house to check on her. LOVE my vet and tech's there.
***crop looks larger than her issue as she has 40cc of warm water in there, but her crop is big***

Seems my year has not started out well for my girls. I hope it gets better!

I just saw on here recently of someone that performed surgery on their hens impacted crop. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/impacted-crop-how-to-treat-your-chickens-surgery-graphic-pic

Thanks for the thread. The next step will probably be surgery but the vet will do it. (we discussed all the options and steps) I am not brave enough do do the surgery myself. I just hope she is just impacted with grass and the flushing will get it out. Dr. very hopeful as this is what's going on.

Welcome BlueBird! I do love the goats!
Novaleigh you seem to be a bit like me. I am so tickled over my chickens! They are so cute and funny and just make me fell really good when I watch them! I have often thought why they make me feel so content? The goats do to in a way and I love my two whippets but those chickens just calm me down.

Mama hen chris- you are not having any luck. I am sorry. I had a serama that had one and it smelled really gross, so I knew it was sour crop, but it was no way as huge as yours. I have heard not to push the liquid up because it can go down the wrong tube and then they drown. Just fyi. Let us know how you do. you are just really luck to have a vet that will work with chickens.

Hi All!

I've just bought by first chicks and I'm too excited to keep it to myself! I bought 3 white leghorns from Western Ranchman this afternoon, and I'm going to add 3 gold sex-link when they get them in next week.

Congrats! I've got to run up there for some pine shavings tomorrow... I'll have to check out what they have.
