yes i live in az. i was asking about, why "no cracked corn in the summer". i thought i was asking one of the other people writing on here earlier. they said don't give the chickens cracked corn in the summer. i came on this site to find out why my chickens yokes are so hard. my chickens do free range on our 1 1/2 acres. we give them the food we get at the feed store, cracked corn mixture and laying mash. we also give them fresh fruits and vegs. i just don't remember the yokes being so thick before. you have to use a mixer to scramble the eggs. not just a fork, the yokes break up into thick pieces. do you know why?

I just had the most awesome time with the chickens! I turned over rocks and items on my property...they would follow right with me, pecking up any little exposed bug, beetle, spider, cockroach, or grub they could find! They had the most content little peeps. So freaking cute! Natural pest control? Yes thanks! =) (I used to have so many cockroaches outside, not anymore! I just love chickens =)

Bluebird- From what little knowledge I have corn is considered a hot food. It is ok in the cooler weather but in the dead heat of the summer it should be avoided. Corn is more difficult for a chicken to digest creating the use of more energy for digestion thus creating an increased internal body temperature. In the hot hot Az summers every little percaution we can take not to overhead our chickens is helpful. I am still throwing out some scratch for mine but will stop giving it to them once the temps hit about 90. I will then give them frozen treats like grapes and melons to help keep them cooler. Welcome to BYC! I hope I helped answer your question.

Anyone ever had to deal with impacted crop? My GLW Francesca is impacted. I noticed a week ago that her crop was huge and it felt like a rock. I gave her olive oil and massaged it a couple times a day. I got it broken down but she wasn't passing anything out the other end. Wasn't getting any better, so off to the vet. It was very large and hanging over her keel. ( won't empty when this large) He made her a "bra" to lift her crop higher than her keel. Anyhow, after two days, it didn't get better, so off to the vet for the day. He tried to have her regurgitate but she wasn't having that, so he tubed her with 40cc of warm water than massage and then got some liquid out of her. He tested that for infection which she does not have. No sour crop either. Anyhow, I learned how to tube her and flush her. I have to do this 2x a day. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I CAN DO THIS!!! I actually got some grass out of her today! yeah. Sunday, the vet tech is coming over to my house to check on her. LOVE my vet and tech's there.
***crop looks larger than her issue as she has 40cc of warm water in there, but her crop is big***

Seems my year has not started out well for my girls. I hope it gets better!
