Darn english language...one word having multiple meanings. I was going for this meaning of story (gunning for the true, not fictitious):

noun, plural-ries, verb, -ried, -ry·ing.

Just Starting Out
Hello Arizonans!
This is an amazing site!! I live just south of Casa Grande, AZ and am planning on getting some chickens. Maybe just 3, 4 or so I haven't decided yet. I have a 10' x 14' area that my husband and I decided would be good to give to the chickens. I have a 3 year old and 22month boys, so I think I want baby chicks so they can get used to being social.
I am thinking about Ameraucana (with the pretty colored eggs), and something that gives a lot of good eggs... (I hear a lot of chickens do that!). maybe a duck too? I don't think I want a rooster...
Right now we only use a dozen or less eggs a week because I only buy them when they are on sale, but we can Definately use more than that! Anyone know where I can get Ameraucana and other chicks locally? I would like to get them from another individual before I go looking at a store.

Looking for pets that just happen to lay eggs.

Yup, I have french black copper marans, easter eggers and welsummers due on the 19th. I think most of the welsummers are spoken for already though.

Memphis, I just put them in last Tuesday, so I haven't candled yet. I know you're busting on those wellies. I will give them a few more days and report back. Got your pm, I will get you her #. Need to dig it out, but I have a migraine again right now.

Az chicken, the eggs came from a 71 year old lady I know who has the most incredible hobby farm in gilbert. I went out there to give her my bobwhite quails that I hatched and came home with 3 dz eggs. Her flocks are beautiful. The basque came from goodyear. Some dr. Imported eggs and hatched them, gave them to pam in goodyear to sell. Not sure why he did that when skyline and greenfire has them, but whatever he wants to do! They are neat looking, a landrace like the icelandics and swedish flower hens. Pics to come.

I have just discovered a hidden nest of EE eggs with MOMMA sitting on them!! (The only ROO around is a stray cochin that keeps jumping in my yard, so I guess he is the daddy). I checked and the eggs are fertile. Those will be interesting chicks!!! Also discovered a new Muscovy nest starting and I was wondering if anyone out there would be interested in any of the babies or eggs. Muscovies are such great moms. I guess I will just leave the eggs in the nest. Let me know if anyone wants some-eggs or babies!!! Thanks

All this egg talk... all this beautiful, precious egg talk. I wants eggs.... aaah! I am so jealous! I need to be patient... I have roos and pullets, so my wish will come true soon!

Something just occurred to me. Do you think Mothra (my aggressive 2 day old EE) is just being protective over her (his?) "flock"? Think maybe she was just trying to defend the rest of the chicks and poults she is brooded with? Because Mothra is peaceful with the other chicks and poults in her brooder. Or perhaps Mothra is just aggressive and dominant by nature? Hmmmm.... I still have so much to learn about chickens.

My dear, you are waaaaaaay over thinking this. If the chick is only 2 days old, she has no real sense of "flock" or "family"...her eyesight probably hasn't even de-fuzzed yet. Her personality SURELY has not yet developed to the point where you should single her out as the troublemaker.

You are likely seeing a bit of the "fight or flight" response, brought on by startle-ment and/or the constant movement of the other chicks in the brooder.

Now, if she becomes a serial pecker, separate her via some hardware cloth for a few days. However, but you probably won't see this sort of extreme behavior until week 3.

Makes sense. Thanks!

FREE Serama rooster, approximately 5 years old. Up until a week ago he got along fine with our other four roosters (we have no hens). Cooped at night and free range during the day. Then the fighting started, to the point of one rooster losing a spur. They've all lived together for several years, and we're at a loss as to what started the behavior.
