Arizona Chickens

Blue Bell is three years old and no way going to be dinner. She does lay eggs. We use the eggs for cooking more than eating. One turkey egg replaces two chicken. I also scramble up her eggs for the chickens. Blue Bell does not like scrambled eggs.

I am getting a couple more if they will ever come into the shop! I was told that Toms can be real mean but I wonder if they are if you love on them like we do?

We had a Tom that was amazingly sweet. He even tolerated my youngest brother riding on him. He lived to be very old, then we ate him.

Not all of them were super sweet like that, but I wonder if we ended up breeding birds that were friendlier because the very sweetest ones ended up surviving to lay eggs for replacements the following year. I think I'd have a tough time raising them for eating now. They eggs are awesome though!

I do think I will keep a Tom if I chance to get one. If he gets mean HE will be dinner!
Bell Bell at 3 years old isn't to old to have fertile eggs is she? Love to try my hand at raising turkeys. I did read that it is hard to do tho?

I don't think it's all that hard. I'm not sure why, (I'll have to ask my mom), but we always took the eggs away from the turkeys and hatched them in an incubator every spring. Maybe it was to keep the hens laying? It was always the most exciting part of spring when the turkey eggs hatched. They always imprinted on us boys, which also made them much more friendly.

How is the weather treating everyone? It still hasn't stopped raining out here in Apache Junction.

We're getting a decent rain here in Tucson too! It started at about 8 am here and has been falling slowly, but steadily ever since.

I hope this isn't the last rain we see before monsoon season.

No fair.. All I have is 40/50 mph wind, and a lot of dust.. Kinda reminds me of when I lived in Casa Grande... Will

It's still drizzling here in Apache Junction too!

Chickens don't seem to mind though.

On a bleaker note, there was some blood crusted on Blinkey's eye this morning.

I'd even settle for the drizzle instead of the dust... Will

Edited cause I could...
