I wish you either lived in Tucson or I lived in Mesa. I'd take them in a second! Hope you find wonderful homes for them

I live in Southern Gila county and have been raising chickens off and on for over 40 years. I have never used water sprays, or cold water bottles, or resorted to any other kind of unnatural cooling. Sure you may loose an occassional chicken due to the heat, but mostly you just need shelter from the hot wind, adequate shade, good ventilation and plenty of clean water. I have an elevated henhouse that is well ventilated and I have a nipple watering system both inside and out. I also keep a water trough in the run, which I check on regularly during the summer. I keep 6-8 laying chickens which keep us adequately supplied with fresh eggs. Keeping more chickens than you need is expensive and a money loosing proposition.

Thank you for adding your perspective about raising chickens in the extreme heat of our desert. Last summer, I did every, single suggestion, many you mentioned in your post, and still lost 5 of my small flock. One of my heat victims I was able to save, and nursed her back to health from heat stroke. My goal is to not lose any of them to the heat this summer. So, along with everything you mention, plus all the other things I did last year, we have insulated and added portable air conditioners to both coops. Some may scoff at this, after all they are "just chickens". Having a backyard flock is a hobby to me and not a business, so yes, I definitely lose money, but gain entertainment, enjoyment, relaxation and provide a very nice environment for some of the Universe's most interesting and precious creatures. I do want to do my best for them. I'm always looking for new, innovative ideas for keeping them cool.
