Hi all. Been away for awhile. Trying to catch up with you this morning.
I was bitten by a "conenose" or "kissing" bug and had bad reactions. Three bites distributed on both hands.
I'm better now, so have been trying to catch up w/FB and boards. So, here I am.........coffee in hand!

I'm also sorry to hear about the troubles everyone is having in this heat. It sure is rough on the birds, isn't it?

Well, I'm off to read some more now. Looks like I am just on posts from about two weeks ago, around where I left off w/a photo of my son and Buffy.

I hope you all have a good day and that your birds do okay in the ever increasing heat!!!!

Cheers,
Stacy

Oh my!!! Now that I have read more, I must say that I am so sorry to hear about the continuing losses.
The ant situation sounds just dreadful. We have used greenlight here, in the past, but only in the front yard, where we don't have any animals. I don't like to use it, but have to resort to it on occasion. I wouldn't use it near my animals, though. I'm glad to read about the DE. I will remember that. I honestly didn't think about them possibly killing my birds. That is just so sad!!
As for the person who has lost people friends, I'm so very sorry to read of your losses, too. My thoughts are with you. That must be very hard.

Back to reading..........
Although, I'm not sure I want to do so. It's making me sad.
{{{{{hugs}}}}}}} to all of you who are going through so much!

Well it has been a terrible ending to the day for me! Around 4 this afternoon I let the 2 standard poodle girls out to go potty in the back yard. I sat down to watch Judge Judy and dozed off. I woke up with a start and thought "the poor dogs why did they bark or scratch at the back door, it is so hot! I went to let them in and no poodle! I ran out and the back gate into the "farm" yard was open. My heart sank. I knew what I was going to find! The Turkeys and the young chickens that are with them were loose!
I found a carnage. Bodies all over the yard! I got the dogs in and went into where Les was taken a nap, crying hysterically! He came back out with me and Gabriel the Royal palm young Tom is dead as is Goldy my red bourbon young turkey hen. One baby turkey was dead. My polish cockerel Fancy was dead. Denise's Cochin baby was dead. 3 baby turkeys missing. The two red hens of Denise's came out from under the shed finally and Polish hen Muppet had hid under a kennel we had in the turkey yard. As we were looking a neighbor down road came up with one of the baby turkeys she found in her yard under her dogs feet but didn't hurt her. The babies can fly so 3 got away over the fence. One turkey came home later for dinner. That leaves just one baby turkey still missing out there in the dark somewhere.

Blue Bell is hurt! She did get herself wedge into some safty but her tail was pull out and she has one, just under the surface of her skin, wound on her back up a bit from her tail and some other minor just first layer of skin imbrasions. She did eat a but tonight and is roosting in her normal spot. I treated the wounds. Her poor tail!

I have a hunch but won't name names that the gate was left unlocked deliberately knowing I had the turkeys out and that the poos would get them or maybe by mistake but it was human done and we here never use that gate! We are going to get a pad lock for it so that can't happen again!
Puffy, I want more turkeys.
I'm so very sorry to hear all this, Fuzzybird.
How HORRIBLE. I have lost birds to my dog twice over the years and it's the worst.
The last time it was my lovely, blind, girl, Flash. She must have been following me/my voice and entered the main yard.
I never saw her do this. She probably got lost. I was in the main garden/chicken area, when I heard her call out..........I ran over, thinking she was just hurt.......but the dog had broken her neck. I cried and cried with her in my arms for a long time. It broke my heart and I STILL (going on three months later) feel horrible about it. It was my fault, as I was dealing with the new baby chicks and never saw Flash. Gosh, I want to cry again just writing this. My heart goes out to you. I am so, so, sorry!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an idea for the ant + free range chicken problem. I think everyone is in agreement that Amdro is at the top of the list for effectiveness, but we fear our free range chickens will eat the crumbs as well. My solution is to build a netting system out of chicken wire or either one of those green house type things I've seen in the home improvement stores or one of those vegetable protectors to put over the ant holes. First pile/sprinkle the Amdro on top of the hole then place the netting/chicken wire over the hole to keep the chickens out. You could have multiple "traps" setup in your yard where ever you find the ant holes. You could secure the traps either by using garden staples around the base or if you make it with a flat top put a big rock on top. Just an idea for everyone to work with. I'll try it myself and let everyone know how it goes. BTW any ant killer you want to keep your chickens out of would probably work here.

I've read that Sevin 5% dust will take care of the ants and would be safe for the chickens. Some people actually dust their chickens in it for mites and lice and add it to their dust baths too. I noticed a trail of ants along the fence in my run last night after reading Novaleighs post so I sprinkled some on the trail. No ants this morning but I'll check again tonight when it gets dark. That seems to be when they are out and about. I wouldn't over do the Sevin either but a few sprinkles on the mounds and trails should be just fine.
