Arizona Chickens

Hooray!! I built a poo roost/box for my ladies and now they are all using it! This makes the coop so easy to clean!! My original four ladies seemed to like to just lay in a corner of the coop at night, but then I introduced the two new young ladies to the roost and they loved it! I heard some bickering in the coop this evening and found that they were all roosting on the poop box! I guess somebody stole somebody elses place! LOL! These chickens are a riot! Something new every day!!!

Hmmm... I was just trying to calculate that last week. Here was my list of currently active members from the greater Tucson area: pimachickens, constance, Tanichca, MagicChicken, SherrieT, DesertMarcy, aznewmom, AnotherKim, LMS, and a few others I'm sure that have slipped my mind. If I didn't list your name, let me know. I'm in the early stages of planning a Tucson BYC pot-luck dinner that will happen next month in conjunction with the arrival of a special BYCer that will be visiting from Apache Junction.

Waving hello! This thread moves FAST. I'm not surprised at the amount of Tuconians on here. All of the poultry books in every library in Tucson,are checked out. The guy at Bookmans says they fly off of the shelves there too. I guess backyard barnyards are becoming the rage now. Speaking of which, what are the most common predators in the city? I'm on the East Side. I'm thinking my biggest worry is the neighbor's free-wheeling cat, or my own dogs.

I have one or two pet quality paint cockerels, but most breeders have not been happy with the results of paint to paint breedings. They tend to be happier with paint to black, and I do have a breeder quality young black cock available.
Oh Thanks! That would be OK for I do have black and white hens almost ready for breeding. I don't think they will be laying until after the heat. I only have one paint hen, "I should say pullets for just Cotton is old enough to breed" I am trying all three colors and see what I get. I just hope PoppyCock is cock. If I get a good head shot of him do you think you could tell? He/she is 18 weeks old.

One more question, does DE keep the black widows away? I have a real problem with them around here. I haven't built my coop yet.I don't plan to get my chickens until October. I'll probably get the coop set up in late September. Anyway, I want to get the black widows under control before then.

Or widow bite...
Wow = lotsa options...

I don't think it was the heat - she didn't have heat related symptoms and after I found her I put her under the water-ers

She was outside the coop for the night & when I found her in the AM she was twitching/shaking like Parkinson's disease.

I didn't check the body as she died during the next evening & I found her in the morning.

I thought it was flopsy but a more advanced stage of the vitamin deficiency.

In retrospect it very well seems like it could have been a neuro-toxin.
