Arizona Chickens

Thanks! That's me!

We are moving from San Diego to the SE Phoenix area... probably Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert, or so... I tried to look up laws last night about having chickens and found something about 200 ft from neighbors. Does that sound right to all of you? That means you really have to have a good sized yard to have chickens... And I'm assuming most houses with HOAs do not allow backyard chickens. Any thoughts/advice would be helpful!

Thanks!
There is no overall ordinance. You need to check the zoning rules for each city in which you are interested. Tempe allows 5 or 6 hens on all single family residential lots; if you are in the Ag district, that restriction goes away and you can have any number and also roosters.

And yes, many HOAs disallow poultry.

Here's a few pics of the poop box/roost. I really works great!

I thought I'd throw in a pic of my coop as well. My wife calls the color "God awful Yellow"! I kinda like how bright and yokey it looks!

The only thing I would change about the poop box is that I should have made the base a little wider. As you can see, some of my ladies shoot for outside the box, but I'd say that it catches about 95% of the turds.
I don't understand the purpose. Is the coop itself hard to clean? My coop is open on one end. The shavings absorb any moisture and the poop dries quickly. I cleaned the coop for the first time (4 months) and it didn't even smell when I went in there. Do you take the roost out to dump it or did you find some sort of lining.

BTW... Very cute coop.

Yeah! In a heart beat! Mine are really interested in what goes on inside. Funny story, when I was treating my two BOs for a fungal infection I had them inside in a dog crate for three nights while I was treating them. I'd get them from the roost and bring them in for the evening to give them their treatments and then release them in the morning. As the sun set on the fourth day after treatments were completed I went outside to lock up the coop and right there waiting at the door, in the dark, was one of my BOs, hoping to spend the night inside!

How funny. Maybe they do want it. I need to make some chicken diapers and let them in on occation (one or two at a time) not all ten. That would be a funny site though.

Quote: Well, I would disagee with meat making them aggressive. A can of tuna probably has less sodium than cat food. Mackerel is good, too. For them, not me. I don't like fish, with the exception of lobster, crab, shrimp...

As with everything, moderation. I know someone who fed her silkies a can of mackerel daily. Know what it looks like when someone has super oily hair? Now imagine that in a silkie

Hey im from laveen arizona. . i got my 2nd flock of chickens just the beging of this year . . Tryng to breed rhode island reds, nd jersey Giants haha !!. . hope all goes well :)
Welcome Roosten. I have one RIR and one Blue Jersey Giant. I thought my Jersey Giant was HUGE until my girls got full grown. Now they all look to be the same size. My Jersey Giant is 10 months old so she still has a bit of growing to do. My RIR, Plymouth Barred Rock's, and New Hampshire Red are all 6 months old and nearly the same size but weight wise she's got them all beat. Love her (and all the rest) I really wanted a GIGANTIC chicken like the ones I saw at the poultry show. Next year I am going to find out where they got their birds.

Mikey, I don't know about the Kibble.. Never had any experience with it.. I would check the ingredients closely before I fed it.. Some pet foods have ingredients that I don't understand, so I wont feed it to my animals..A little caution goes a long ways, and watch the salt content... Will
