Arizona Chickens

HI all !!! Haven't been on too much lately so I just wanted to say Hello and express my condolences for all the losses it seems everyone is experiencing. Hope things get better for all of us!!!

Thanks Gallo!

You nailed it with the projects - looking into buying the house behind us at an auction - never did anything like that before though - kinda scary.

Going to take the kids to a welding contest in Yuma in October - an overnighter - never did an overnighter with HS kids before - way scary!
We also have to bring our own tools & equipment to weld outside - gotta fab EVERYTHING before the contest - it's going to be nuts!
Sounds like fun. Can I go back to high school?

HI again! Just wanted to throw this out to all on BYC. I have a few MUSCOVY teenagers that are looking for a new home and SEVERAL heritage turkey teens available also. They are ALL so beautiful. Please PM me if there is any interest . They are all healthy and doing GREAT. All birds are fully feathered , free range, and very friendly. I wanted to put it out on BYC first before I put it on CL.

or take them to Pratts. Any body out there know of any other sites I can advertise them on? If you know of any, THANKS!!!

I have a single female rescued quail. I keep her in my cage with my chickens. They all get along. She is very lonely for love...LOL She calls for a mate in the morning and dusk and she can be very loud about it! She drops down low and freezes when I pet her. I have a square board leaned up against the cage that creates a small triangle shaped space only she can get into. That is where she lays her eggs. She loves to sit on her eggs all day. She took my new chicks under her wing and slept with them when they were a few weeks old up on a log. She always slept on the ground before that time. Now she sleeps up high, not next to the chickens unless it storms and then I move her in the coop along with the others. The chickens all sleep on top of the coop in my cage. No one actually goes inside my coop yet or sleeps inside of it unless I move them in there after it is dark because of rain...LOL She also loves dried worms. She begs and follows me around the cage for them when she sees the bag, it is so cute. That is the only time where she doesn't respect the chicken hierarchy, she can be a bully trying to get those worms! It is every bird for themselves! I have a picture in my profile of her under albums.

What a cute story. Can't wait to get my quail.

This morning we put up a few of our cats... We let our 5 1/2 week old
Chicks out to enjoy the front yard.. They found a ants nest with rollie
pollies.. I think they were just going for the ant larva, then it seemed they
were eating the tiny ants.. I could not believe they were eating the ants..
They have no mom hen to tell them not to.. They also run down the moths
& flies.. Protein, protein,protein..
Do you think they will eat spiders?

I am sure they will. While I was in Oregon I followed my friends chickens around they yard as the found all the spider webs, ate the spiders and their egg sacks.

Who's getting ready for their next bunch of chicks? I'm thinking of getting three more chicks, not sure on the breeds yet, to add to the flock. This is the first time I'll be adding to the flock. I will not be a victim of chicken math! :)
I have 5 Black Australorps now. We started with six and one got suffocated at around 12 weeks. Flat as a pancake in the chicken-dog pile. Anyways, what are your plans for adding to your flock this fall?
No Additions here of chickens, will be adding about 10 - 30 quail.

Is my coop over crowded? Like I said in the above post I have five hens that are full grown now, almost one year old. The coop is 15 sq ft and the roost is probably 6 sq ft multi-leveled. They all want to be on the top rung but one of them usually ends up on the bottom rung. Just not enough room for all five on the top. Well lately one of the hens stays out in the run area for as long as I can tell. She's still there when I go to bed. Too crowded or do you think she's just being anti-social?
I do plan to pop out the coop a couple of feet anyways since I want to add a couple more to the flock so don't flame me :)
I'd say if you're free ranging they you're fine. My coop is 8x4 feet pls 2x4 feet of nest boxes, plus 4x16 feet of run and 8x4 feet of run under the coop. This area allows a total of 128 sq feet of space if the chickens needed to be locked up for the day. I have 9 full grown standard and 2 bantam. I would say that if they were free ranged that you can go with a minimal coop size as they only use it to roost at night.

Also, I'd say with your hen that's hanging outside, she might just be hot. I have two hens that are hanging out outside after dark.

We have chukar partridges. They are pretty cool looking, similar to a quail in the way they act but bigger. They are in their own pen and not near the chickens, I heard it is not good to mix birds.
