Arkansas folks speak up.........

Oh no! I hope that's not the case about shipping eggs cause I just dropped $35.00 for 6+ BCM eggs! I bought these to hatch for my DH. His birthday is June 28 and if they ship Saturday, then they should be hatching really close to that date. He's been begging me to find some of these for him. Happy Birthday honey! (hehe this is what he gets for buying me a large screen tv for my birthday) I sure hope everyone's live birds arrive safe and sound! It's starting to get too warm for them to lay over in shipping!

I think my cuckoo's are finished hatching. I got 5 out of 11. I candled the other six eggs and it looks like a maybe for one more, but five of them look like quitters for sure. No movement at all and they don't quite look full of chick. It looks like I have 3 pullets and 2 roos. Not bad.

Crazy day! I almost lost Betty the Beautiful Bitty to a plastic predator! The sand tub was empty and she apparently jumped on the side of it and it flipped over on her. I was at the coop window calling the chicks and Betty failed to appear. I immediately suspected that the tub had eaten her. I ran fast as I could around to the door and went in and sure enough there was my baby underneath. She was hot and so confused. I took her to the water and she took several good long drinks. She's ok now.

And I have a lame little cochin mix. Her hips seem to be dislocated. I think she jumped off the roost and landed on linoleum and it pulled her legs apart. I have her inside in a hospital mail tub with her legs splinted and pulled together. She's eating and drinking, hating every minute of that splint, but I'm trying.

I had to figure out the USPS thing a couple of months ago and did some investigating. I can tell you all why this is happening now in our area. The PO contracts with Fedex to carry the live birds from airport to airport. This is the only way they do them now (except for chicks and eggs). They will not let them be in a truck for an extended period of time, which is obvious. Basically the process is, a bird is dropped off (or picked up) at a local PO. Fedex then gets the animal and ships it by plane to the destination city. Then fedex delivers the animal to the local PO, who gets it to the recipient. Well all that used to be just fine here in Central AR, until fedex changed. Apparently they used to have a couple of planes that came into the LR airport, not any more. To save money fedex decided that Memphis was close enough to drop direct airport service to LR. Now a plane lands in Memphis and Fedex puts those items onto trucks and drive them to LR. It is too far for live shipments by ground, and adds an extra day to those items the PO contract with them, so we can't get them anymore. You can still get chicks since they are sent differently and are covered by a different postal regulation. I know this is no comfort, but it is what is happening. Folks in NE Arkansas can still get them since they are close to Memphis.

You do have an option, it's not terribly good, but it is there to use if you need to. If you have a relative, or any other address in NE Arkansas or the Memphis area, you can ship the bird there, but you have to drive up there and pick it up. That is the only option we have right now. Like I said chicks and eggs are still OK to ship via the USPS.

Well, that stinks! So now she is out all that shipping charge because no one could tell her she couldn't get it shipped here?

It does at that, it super stinks. The best thing to do is check yourself - call the PO in the town where it comes from and ask them to check the delivery zip code for a live bird overnight shipment to see if the service is available. Like I said though we live in a dead zone thanks to the USPS switching to Fedex and Fedex leaving us in the dark.

Ummmm. . . I think I get the blue ribbon for the worst mail service EVER. The nearest post office to us is in HOUSTON! For some reason my post lady does not like me. I had her mother for a patient once and she actually requested a different nurse. Small towns SUPER STINK.

I sold my Marans chicks. It's weird how I miss them being in the garage. The guy I got them from emailed me and told me what the colors meant. The black ones were roos, so I only had three pullets in the lot. Just my luck!
