Arkansas folks speak up.........

I'm afraid that after about 5 or 6 weeks of treatment, my sweet little doxie mix, Dixie, still cannot walk, and the vet sees no real chance for recovery.

I'm in the market for a used doggie wheelchair/cart/walker, so I wanted to ask here if anyone has one for sale or knows where I might look for one. The cheapest I found a new one online for (for a small to medium dog) was about $165 and that's just way WAY out of my budget.

Dixie is just bored to death in her little rubbermaid tub. I hope a wheelchair will help make her life a little better. I believe she is between 14 and 18 pounds. She's a mix, so not quite as squatty as a pure doxie but close.

I'll be back online tomorrow. I hope someone has some ideas for me. You guys are always so smart and helpful.

OK, a cheapo way to try it out. Buy a harness. Buy a baby doll umbrella stroller. Lean the stroller over backwards. See how he fits in it to give him freedom of motion on his front end. You can cut holes in the back of the stroller to let his back legs through, or just to try it out, make sure he is laid straight in the stroller them pad his back and strap him in until you see where he needs to be to work best. Connect the handles to the harness. The whole idea is to spread the weight around and avoid friction, The problem I see with the one in the link is that there is going to be a lot of pressure where thar figure 8 tubing hits the legs, and he will develop sores. A suspension harness is usually effective if you can prevent any pressure sores. This is just a temporary device but should work until you figure out what will work for you, and give you time.

Chicky Tocks...

Oh Cherry!

Ok, ~sniff~ here's business. Dixie is thin and she kinda looks doxie/chi-hoohoo. She sure doesn't look to be a 14 lb dog!

She does look thin, but has lost all her muscle tone in her lower body since she can't run around anymore. She was heavier before this happened and probably a bit overweight. Her records showed she was 18 pounds! Now her back legs are just skin and bone, poor thing.

She's actually buffed up in the upper body since that photo though, I guess from the steroids, and can pull herself up on the side of the bucket and has even managed to get out a time or two, so we really have watch her. When we're home, we sit her on the couch with us as much as possible.

I may try to build one. I did dig out an old toy shopping cart yesterday. It's about the right size. I just have to find a few more parts and a harness. Hopefully I can figure something out.

I'd seen the cart for $120-something on ebay, but the shipping was $40.00 coming from China. I'm a little leary of buying one from overseas. I've been buying (and selling) on ebay for years, and most of the problems my friends and I have had were with international transactions. I'll just see what I can throw together until I can find a nice used one.

Thanks everyone for the ideas!

You can do it! Think about how excited she'll be. Just get her some doggie diapers and she'll be good to go!

Yea, we were just talking about that. My kids reminded me that we can't take her out without them. I think I'll get her a cute tutu or something to wear over the diaper so she'll look cute, lol!

Would you look at the size of my dog's head!!! Poor guy, he killed the copperhead Saturday night, but only after he got bit. His throat swelled up so bad that I had to take off his collar.

My oldest daughter walked up on one the day before in the chicken pen, just before dark, and my 11 year old saw one the day before that. This is really getting old!

There was also a HUGE non-poisonous one in the hen house about a week ago, and it had three eggs in it's belly.......but I can't tell you how I know that. That's the first time one ever got in that I know of. He got in from underneath the barn, but I don't see how, he was so big. I have 1X2 welded wire underneath on that side. I have hardware cloth on the other side where the newer pens are. I guess it's back to the store for more hardware cloth, sigh... Will I ever get done making improvements and spending money?

I'm sure it was. Actually, he got bit Friday night, not Saturday. He was feeling better the next day, but the swelling didn't go down until Sunday. He's back to 100% now, thank goodness!

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I'm not online but a couple of days a week so I'm getting caught up.

Someone asked if I had a photo of my Golden Neck d'Uccle pullet a while back, maybe 4 to 6 weeks ago. It might have been Julie, can't recall now. I just remembered to get a photo of her this weekend. Sorry it took me so long. I have a Blue Mille Fleur too, but she was under the cage dust bathing.
