Arkansas folks speak up.........

Can you believe this cold? I knew we were in for a hard winter, but for around here in the south central of the state, it's dang frigid! I couldn't survive a night out there in those temps, so happy to not be a chicken tonight.

....although my chickens are getting plenty of attention. Both sleeping quarters have a 250w red bulb, and I fed them all warm oatmeal pie before bed.

I have been making a pan of cornbread for my birds every day. I'll have to try the oatmeal pie.

I have a trio of Bantam Cochin/EE mix, 2 pullets, 1 roo for sell. All must go together. These chickens definately favor the cochin and are very pretty. One pullet is blue, the other is black. Stinkerbeau the roo is butter colored with a nice little mix of black. All were hatched in April of last year, and the girls just started laying blue eggs in the late fall. I'm asking $25 for the trio. (these photos are of them when they were a little younger and the grass was still green)

The clouds came rollin in, the storm front is approaching. It's actually warming up - feels down right BALMY at 37 out there now!!!!
The chicks either know it's going to storm or maybe they just think it's dusk becaues it's getting darker, they all went to bed either way!

I put a lamp in each coop, becaue the babies are mini-molting and they seemed to be really cold last night, and Mr Roo is finally showing signs of frostbite on the very tips of his comb. I'm sure they'll all be fine now, although I wouldn't say that they're pampered. I really don't want them to be TOO dependent on me/electricity because in Arkansas snow comes with ICE and ice usually results in mass loss of power!!!

Rooster Cogburn Jr. :

I'm having to sell all of my birds. I live in Camden. I have a vareity of birds. Mostly NHR. Will sell pairs and trios if available. Msg me or e-mail me if you're interested. I also have over 400 egg cartons.

How much for the egg cartons? I'm close to Sparkman. Sorry you're having to give up your birds. I hope it's for a good reason and not a health or financial issue, or worse. All my best to you!

If you run out of options, I might can take a few females, but I have over 20 roosters already, so I just can't help you out there, sorry. Oh, I'll PM you.

Sorry I've been absent so long. I still love you guys!

I just don't have internet at the farm anymore, just in town.

Welcome to all the new members! Glad to see you here and looking forward to getting to know you all better.

14 for the high here today in NW Arkansas. I just finished evening chores and it feels SO much colder than it did this morning. My 3 won'tgetoffthenest broody silkies (no eggs!) got a heat lamp. I know they're warm, but I have to force them eat and drink, so I'm worried about their hardiness. I do have teenage chicks in brooders outside in the barn (4-10 weeks old), but so far they have stayed nice & warm. The two Christams chicks are in the house!

It's just bitter out there, a killing cold. All horses & cattle have more hay than they could eat in a week, fresh water 2 x a day and shelter. I was tempted to lock up the yearlings and old horses (5 yearling minis & ponies) and a 29 year old mare, a 21 year old gelding and a*42* year old mare, but they'll be happier going in and out of the barn as they please. They are finishing dinner now.

Our furnace fan is out and the part was supposed to be in yesterday, but isn't here yet

We have a fireplace in the living room w/a blower and were using a kerosene heater in the other end of the house. We're OK, but not exactly warm.

Bundle up friends and don't go out unless you have to...
