rbamterry (and other Silkie breeders), are your Silkie roos mean?

I have a Silkie roo that's always been fine to me, but chases my two smallest daughters if they get close to his ladies. Well, just this past week he's been flaring up at me too, but just a stomp towards him sends him on his way, but I still don't like it. Is this pretty normal? I have 2 standard roosters and neither are as cranky as this little spitfire!

I have a 3 month old white silkie cockerel now that I'm tempted to keep because he's the biggest lap chicken that ever was. I hate to give up the older roo, he's so pretty but he's such a butthead! The girls don't take him seriously, and just run away laughing, but it bothers me. Maybe I'm just looking for a good excuse to keep this new little boy though.

He's such a sweetheart!

I believe that regardless of breed you are going to come across unruly roos. Some breeds are just worse than others. Just watch your kids around him, sometimes the kids reactions can actually make a situation worse. (Make him think that he is 10 feet tall and bulletproof

We had a very LARGE roo that we actually bought from a 4-Her to help her out and he was awesome with adults - let you do anything, but when our little girl got near him - he went nuts and attacked her. Needless to say he found a new home rather quickly.

I think you're right about that. My oldest daughter was in the run one day (rare for her to go see the chickens), and was laughing at how he thought he was such a big shot, walking around like he owned the place and all the hens, including the standard hens, were his. My daughter acted like she was scared and took off running just so he'd chase her. She immediately tripped and fell flat on her face. That rooster just "growled" at her and walked off with his chest stuck out even more! He really thought he'd scared her off! Of course, we all got a good laugh out of it!

I've been telling my middle daughter to just stomp back at him, so maybe he'll give up trying to bully her. It's the 5 year old I'm worried about.

I'm in Fayetteville, but don't know of any Jersey cows. I know of a dairy in Claremore, OK, but they use Holstein X Jersey crosses to increase the cream in the milk. The cows are gentle and handled daily.

You could try contact Swan Bros. Dairy to see if they're thinking about selling cows that aren't in production (didn't breed)?

I had one white silkie roo that was so mean. You didn't have to get close to his girls. Especially young children, he would run up the hill to attack them. I wanted to keep him so I could have fertile silkie eggs until my others got older but I guess the fox got him and 2 of his white girls.

Welcome! I've been through Oil Trough many times when we used to live in Jonesboro. We passed through going to church camp.
I'm from the community of Monkey Run, Arkansas (originally). Bet no one knows where that is! (Except maybe mtnhomechick.)

I was just there last Saturday. Looked at a dog at Rocky Ridge. Now that place is something else. Has anyone ever been to RockyRidge?
