your Golden Feather membership has expired. NonGFM only gets one classified at a time.
I see how it is. As usual, it is all about the Benjamins!

Hello, my name is Mark and I'm from Siloam Springs. I have 42 eggs hatching forum first try at barnyard birds, I grew up with commercial hens. I chose buff orpingtons and am beyond excited as I'm at day 15. We live on six acres and are trying to be mostly self sufficient.

I finally got my chickens and even better they were free!! The only this is I had to take the rooster and I had not planned on having one. I have no experience with roosters at all my family always just kept hens. The person I got them from said to never turn my back on him! Does this mean he is mean and is there any way to show him I don't want to hurt him??

Unfortunately, he probably is on the mean side. We have one rooster that snuck up behind we and flew at me. I ran after him yelling and screaming, kicked him, and three rocks at him. Basically, for less than 10 seconds I wanted him to think he was going to die. Probably shouldn't have gone after him for even that long. My general rule is 3 seconds with any animal. I think those are the worst. They are cowardly and always wait until your back is turned. It worked for awhile until he grew up and became a bit braver and started attacking people head on. So one day I challenged him and he returned the challenge. When he flew at me, I booted him across the yard. That ended his bad behavior with me, but he will try to intimidate every new person that comes over unless I am in the yard with them. Roosters, when they take their jobs seriously don't understand what friendship with humans is. All he will understand is who is in charge of the yard. Him or you. Most people say to get rid of roosters with bad temperments. I am beginning to think they are right. There are too many nice ones out there, to put up with anything nasty. Our nasty one is getting culled when he is fully grown.

Welcome from Decatur! We currently have 28 eggs in our incubator. All of ours are purebred crosses. We are on day 13. Starting to get excited for hatch day, even if it is week away. My family is trying to be somewhat self-sufficient as well. All of our chickens are dual purpose breeds. Two of which are buff orpingtons. They are great birds, we are really enjoying them. The first batch of crossbred chicks we hatched out have been very vigorous. We managed to hatch 13 of 16 and all of those chicks have been very healthy and growing at an incredible rate. We are trying to create a bird that lays well (for more than 2 years), forages well, and maintains good table qualities. It's so much fun to work with chickens because you can make so many changes so quickly with your breeding program. Well, quick as in much faster than breeding other barnyard animals due to their fast gestation period.

There are so many knowlegeable people on this site and many great threads to look at. Happy hatching, and again welcome to the site!
