Hi Plum Tuckered! I can relate to that name.

The babies are so precious! I love the silkies. DH has been so kind to put up with my affinity with chickens, but he draws the line at silkies. He says that we'll have none of those fru fru chickens.

So....I've been out again today

the bator is warming up and tomorrow morning I plan to set these!

Cuckoo Maran eggs! They'll just have to do until I get ahold of the Blue Coppers I've put myself on the list for.

Those should arrive in about a month. I think after that batch, I'll be done until next year. .... I think.

Welcome Plumtuckered!!

I love all the pics!! My camera isn't working so I can't take pics right now. All of my silkie eggs that hatched are part sumantra and phoenix.

Anyone have experienced hatching duck eggs? I had silkies sitting on eggs but I'm scared to let them hatch them out because I've not had good experience. So when I got room freed up in the incubator I put them in there. I have a few in the hatcher. One of them I thought would hatch several days ago. When I candle it you can see movement in the air cell? Any idea of when it will hatch?

I think it takes duck eggs an extra 7 days to hatch.

I tried to buy an incubator today but my husband thinks he can make one for less than they cost. I should be ready to start hatching next year.

Jakie, what kind of duck eggs do you have "cooking"? I would like to raise a couple of ducks in the backyard, but ducks are against code - chickens are not. I have no idea why. I thought about muscovies since they are supposed to be pretty quiet, but are apparently prone to fly. Guess I could clip the wings. Have any suggestions on a breed for my situation?

Dawn - You husband is right, I think one can be made for less too. However I would tell you to get a good broody hen, they can not be beat. They do all the work, plus the will raise and protect them. So if you have one or can find one go for it. Both of mine are busy at the moment or I would let you have one. My wife would kick my A** if I gave away her blue cochin who is sitting on fake eggs right now.

On second thought - maybe I can slip some duck eggs under that cochin

Chicky tocks - I like my cuckoo maran she is very tame and lays about 6 days a week. It is a fairly dark egg as well, not sure on the scale, but it is the darkest egg in my basket. Her egg is at the very bottom of this pic, there is a speckled egg next to it on the right from my welsummer.

We kept chickens and ducks a few years back and the only way anything ever hatched was under a chicken. My ducks never sat on eggs but my hens hatched the duck eggs. I agree that there is nothing better than nature. As soon as we get our run/house squared away I plan on getting some older chickens that will sit. All this rain has caused some drainage problems I started out with 5 females and 1 roo. I'm down to 2 females and the roo. And the 2 ducks of course. Is that sleet? It's sleeting as I am typing.

My husband was LHAO when he saw what I wrote. This is AR so ya never know one day it may sleet in May.
