Arkansas folks speak up.........

Well, we went to the flea market in Beebe today. Main intent was to obtain a roo for our hens. Accomplished. Nothing special, just a mixed breed roo. Just using him to "continue" our back yard flock of mutt chickens.

Then we saw the rabbits. I've been wanting rabbits for ages. Already have the hutch built, have rabbit feed, feeders, waterers, the whole shabang, just no rabbits. This guy had young does and bucks (6-10 weeks old) cali/new zeland mixes. He told hubby he'd throw in the two cages if we'd take them all for $100. Well, needless to say hubby loves me so he accepted. So, now we have 6 does and 10 bucks for a grand total of 16 rabbits. Oh wait ... one of the does is a cali/chinchilla mix so she won't get as big as the others. Told hubby that she was a "bunny" not a "rabbit".

Then hubby spotted a tote with 20 baby chicks about 2 weeks old. Asked the guy what kind, he said mutts. Hubby asked how much, he said $1 each. Hubby said "Sold". I had fun trying to find something not too expensive to bring home all the chicks & the rooster! Thank goodness the rabbits were already caged! LOL

But, out of the 20 chicks, I'm hoping we get at least 50% roosters so we can have some fryers. We'll use the small 4x4 coop we originally built, to house the younger's and fence off part of the run (which is about 40x60 feet) for that coop so that everyone can get acquainted. The younger girls will join the older girls at the appropriate time.

And, we've got plenty of young buck rabbits to choose as breeders for the does we now have and any "extra's" will get to visit freezer camp~!

So today we've added a Rooster (for our 13 hens), 20 mutt chicks and 16 rabbits! Oh what a day this has been!

wow! what a day!! where is this located-what is this place called? hope to get up there very soon..thanks!

Drop me a line when you are over at Monticello. We can talk chickens! You can also see Jen at her Mosquito Beach Pet Emporium! Its 1/4 block west of Hwy 425 on Hwy 278, behind Ray's Restaurant. I would be happy to show your friend how to sex a rabbit. I can tell at about 5 weeks old. My father could tell at 3 weeks or so. Your friend's seller KNEW it was a buck. I would demand a refund. BYC does not like drama coming on the forum, so we best not say much about it. I will say, if you want to make a drive to Monticello I would be happy to show you. I am sure Elias (heritagehabitatfarm) up in Clinton would be happy to teach your friend. there are several rabbit threads on Facebook and
BackYardHerds.com
may also be of help.
I will be in Monticello Monday checking on my house I have there. Lived there for two years, or rather my wife and kids did while I was deployed and she was working on her masters. Got to see what work I need to do and if I can put it on the market.

I have been told that there is an Amish settlement near Hot Springs. Does anyone know where it is? Or where someone who is will process chickens? The three butchers here will only process deer or cattle.

There are a lot of duck pluckers in Stuttgart area that might process a chicken. Look around for duck pluckers or ask around at the hunting stores. After the duck season they close up shop though.

Arkansas81 - It really doesn't have a name lol it's just the local flea market that is only open on Saturday. Beebe is north of Cabot on Highway 67 .. or south of Searcy on Highway 67.

The thing is, you have to get there early in order to get animals! They go fast around there. We only paid $6 for the roo and he was the last one they had! The week before we lost out on a beautiful roo by a matter of seconds! As with any flea market, sometimes they've got the goods, and sometimes they don't.

Oh, it's also houses the local animal auction (goats, pigs, cows & horses) on various Saturdays. I now know that the goat auctions are held on the second Saturday of every month at 4:00 pm. lol
