Arkansas folks speak up.........

This is only my second time with a broody. The first time I had to remove the one chick that hatchedas the flock was too vicious. I have a totally different flock now and iI thought if the two girlsshared a box the entire time then the two would pprobably work together to defend the chicks. Thought I would try it anyway.

My first concern is that the nest box they have chosen is about afoot and a half off the ground. Not sure how that will work for the chicks.:/

Both girls went broody and sitting together on 4 eggs. .they had a surprise this morning on day 20!!

Puddin, the nest box being off the floor won't matter for the initial as they will just jump out to follow momma hen. However, they won't be getting back. I normally put the bottom (or both halves if enough room) of a plastic dog house for my broodies to use. The small lip at door keeps water, etc. out but the chicks can easily get in. I have also used a dog crate and then I have a door I can use to open and close. It depends upon your broodie. Believe me my Faverolles' and Buttercups' didn't allow anyone to mess with their babies. I had a Faverolle (normally the most timid of hens) take a chunk out of my cheek for messing with her on the nest. She attacked my dogs through the fence. Another flock member wouldn't have a chance. I only had one rooster that would harm babies and that psycho bird was gone immediately. Any rooster that tries to kill his own offspring shouldn't be contributing to the gene pool. :)
