Arkansas folks speak up.........

Just found this thread. I'm in Mtn View, Ar. Hello neighbors.
I am diving in head first into chickens for the first time. I have 5 4h kiddos and they are all getting hatching eggs from the U of A. Cross your fingers for me.

Welcome! I didn't know U of A had started giving eggs again. What breeds are you getting?

Crossing my fingers. It's a 3.5 hr drive from our place, so I'm not sure how that will affect the hatch. Any idea of the average hatch percentage to expect? I'll be thrilled with 60% since it's my first rodeo. We have a great ag teacher that is baby walking us thru it, so I'm hoping it's not a disaster.

Congrats! and Good luck.  We have some of the Favs, Houdans, Dorkings, Phoenix, and have had the silkies, and Araucana from Dr. Bramwell.  I hope you have a good hatch!
what's your favorite? Did you show any of them? My kiddos plan to try and show them at fair time.

I once got hatching eggs from a lady way up a real rough gravel road, plus my gravel road is pretty rough at times too. I shook them up so much I only had a 33% hatch rate. So cushion them well so they don’t get shaken up any more than you can help. And don’t let them cook in the car. Keep them out of the sun and don’t leave them locked in a hot car if you stop somewhere.

I wish I could tell you what kind of hatch rate to expect. I’ve had 100% hatch on shipped eggs, five turkeys from Lucky Pickens who used to be on this thread. I also had a 25% hatch rate on shipped eggs, one out of four, also turkeys from Lucky Pickens. I’ve had 100% hatch with my own eggs, I’ve had some pretty lousy hatches with my own eggs. With a good mentor you should do OK but each hatch is different, whether in an incubator or under a broody.
