Arkansas folks speak up.........

Oh, and Atwoods usually doesn't get the Marans in. The girl that has worked there for years said that this might be the first time she's gotten them. I noticed Ideal was sold out of a lot of the more sought after and rare breeds, so these were probably the few leftovers they had after filling orders. There might have been some little cockerels in with the straight runs. I didn't look since I want a feather legged roo.

Looks like it is probably just a bad pic to me. The way the angle it was taken makes it look off a little. I have a cuckoo Maran and she is kinda dark like that in the right light and angle. I noticed the hen in that pic does not have feathered legs, so it would be bred to the English standard not the French, if that matters to you.

FWIW - I do not like my Maran at all, the eggs are pretty, but the bird is a pain. I hand raised her as a chick and she just never calmed down, she is the only unfriendly bird I have. She will be on the grill pretty soon. MMM... chicken fajitas

Rbamterry, Just wondering if you can test your own birds once you get that license? How long does it take to get the test results back?
I was thinking about getting that license, who would i need to contact?
Thanks much, luvarabhorses

Yes - I can test my own birds. Results take less than a min.

Each test is good for 90 days. They have the school once a yr.
If you have your flock NPIP then a licensed Livestock inspector has to do that and you just schedule an appointment with them to have that done.

The marans rooster and maybe some of the hens I sold lilbreeches was feather leg and I hatched some of the eggs after I sold them, and a lot of them came out feather legged, maybe she has some eggs available. (I already sold my babies.)

There is also a guy in Conway selling Cuckoo Marans and Black Silkie chicks on craigslist. His add title just says "baby chicks". I still have my little chicks for sale, too. Anybody??

Just a shout out about the Certified Local Farmer's Market in Argenta (I know there is another great one in Conway that has many of the same folks). You central Arkies need to be getting over there on the weekends!

Today's haul for me:

Grassfed beef & pork, pastured, organic chickens, fresh milk, fresh butter, raw cheeses, cabbage, shallots, garlic, sweet potatoes, fresh-made pasta, catfish filets, nonsense mushrooms, strawberries, spinach, and herb plants for my garden. We had a heck of a meal tonight, and now my freezer's stocked for the next couple of weeks with steaks, chicken, roasts, ground beef and sausage, all grassfed and finished. YUM!
