Sorry about the coon attack - you are lucky only one was hurt. Your daughter did very brave and compassionate thing - you have taught her well.
Awww VeryCherry I'm so sorry to hear about your predator attack. Your little girl was so brave to take matters in her own hands and do what was right. I can honestly say that that would be something that I myself would have to call DH in for.
Yes, it's times like this I wish I had a DH, but at other times I'm glad I don't, lol!
I still can't believe Jill could do it. She had tears in her eyes, poor thing.
I know I was lucky that it just got the one pullet that night. It could have been a lot worse. I had put a piece of scrap wood up in front of the pen, but it was just a little shy of going all the way across. We found a bigger piece in the barn last night and leaned it against the pen, with a bag of quickcrete in a bucket up against it to keep from moving, and it evidently worked well enough as a temporary fix, but I'm headed to the store shortly for hardware cloth. Those racoons will take any chance they can get.
The other four, the Hooter Girls (and I suspect at least one of them might be the cook and maybe a bouncer) are the least flighty of the whole bunch.
Lol! Most of my EE's/Ameraucanas are very friendly too, but I do have a white hen that's pretty jumpy. She's friendly if you move slow to pick her up, and then you have to calm her down a bit. I have a white male chick that's sweet but jumpy too. Something about the whites?
