Arkansas folks speak up.........

mzfancichicks... I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm from NW Arkansas - Harrison. Just curious if anyone was around this area?

Welcome! I'm in the South Central part of the state.

I can't get anyone to respond to this on the Emergency Thread... I have a pullet that is screaming, keeps her neck stretched out and now is just hobbling around, not walking. She eats a bit and drinks, but mostly lays there with her neck out. What could be wrong?

I feel like I need to cull, since I think she's in pain, but I'm having a hard time doing it. She is one of my favorites, very tame and trusting..

What should I do?

Oh no julie! I'm not going to be much help, I would feel everybit as helpless as you do. How long has she been this way? Is she laying yet? Possibly eggbound? Maybe just about to lay and is like I was myself in labor...a total basket case? Have you been all up through her feathers and examined her feather by feather?

Yes, she's just about to start laying. Yesterday when she started the screaming, she would run around in circles, so I did think about her maybe wanting to lay, but it's not that. I felt her all over. I can't see any evidence of wounds, or eggbound, or anything.

Could she has something stuck in her throat or crop? I had one that acted a little anxious and started weezing and whining last week (a favorite of course!), and I paniced thinking she had a respiratory thing, but she must have just swollowed something she shouldn't have, because she managed to shake it loose or swallow it by the next day. Does her crop feel normal? Anytime the crop seems even a bit mushy or odd in any way, I give Apple Cider vinegar in the water and make them drink. I mix it stronger than I would normally. If it's crud or mucus it helps to cut it, and can help with some other things. I may not be even close, but it might be worth a shot.

If her crop is impacted (my spelling doesn't look right), I think there is a post or sticky on that.

I'm still searching the chicken doctor webs for you. Is it possible that she has something stuck in her craw? Does she have access to long pieces of grass?

How is her breathing? Can you tell if it's normal, or if she's having trouble getting air?

I had one of mine try to swollow one of the strings on a feed bag. Luckily it was still attached to the bag at one end. I tried to pull it out and it got tangled around her tongue, and I almost pulled her tongue out before I realized what was happening. Sigh... the things that can go wrong!

Her breathing seems normal. She has enough energy to try to run from me. She has stopped screeching so much. I'm going to wait and see how things are in the morning.
