Arkansas folks speak up.........

How many chicks did you have out there and why would they take three? Either way that is a real bummer.

On a better note: we began and finished the framing today for our new coop. This thing is huge. I will put some pics up on my page. I hope to have it done this week. I am really trying to find a way to the meet up on the 7th. Im a bride's maid and I have to go to the shower on that day about 1:eek:o

7 were out there, now just 4 left. It's weird.

There's no such thing as a "huge" coop! It will be "too small" in NO time!

(unless of course your chicks up and just disappear like mine did)

(sigh) Im sorry. I know all about missing animals. When I was little our family dog had 13 puppies. One moring they were all gone. Turns out that some kids down the road thought they wanted them and just took them in broad daylight. We got them back but nothing never felt safe anymore. Then again this was in Rose City (ghetto) and we were used to things "going missing".

The whole thing is 8x8x6. The coop it's self is 8 ft long by 4 ft tall and 2 ft wide. It sits two ft off the ground. Since we are only allowed to have up to four in Sherwood, this is gonna be heaven on earth for our hens. We have also installed a chicken wire skrit around the bottom to deture any diggers. My hubby thinks Im over doing it. I think he needs to hush.

I hope you find your babies soon. Or at least find out what happened to them to help put your mind at ease.

My new coop is 8x8x6 too! Right now it just has 5 birds, so yeah it's like heaven since they really only spend a few hours awake in there in the morning time. I chose to make it 8ft x 8ft because it's a convenient length to buy 2x4's in and not have to cut them before use! lol

Thanks for your well-wishes!

YAY! 8 footers were $1.80 at Lowes. The only costly ones I bought were the treated ones for the base. The two hens I have currently and the two I plan on getting soon will be quite happy! The smaller coop I have them in right now will be my temporary coop for intergrating the two flocks.

Sorry to hear about your missing chicks Tala. That's so odd. If a kid took them the parents would have to wonder where they came from. Maybe put up a "lost" poster around the neighborhood so they can see it.

HAHA! I have coorupted a fellow "city folk" into a chicken person! Zach (my DH) wants to know if I can get a silkie from anyone after the new coop is built. I am looking to get a EE. He thinks thier awesome.

That is false - it is illegal to keep poultry in the city of NLR without a permit which only cost $1 a year. With a permit you are legal. In the code below it says a health inspector will come out, but they no longer do that, it was changed at a city council meeting a few months ago, but the code online has not been updated yet.
Here is the actual code:
ARTICLE IV. FOWL

Sec. 10-166. Running at large prohibited.
It shall be unlawful for any person to permit any chickens, guineas, ducks, geese or other fowl to run at large.
(Code 1980, § 7-53)

Sec. 10-167. Permit to keep; investigation; fee.
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to keep any poultry, duck, goose, turkey, guinea, peafowl, dove or any other fowl of any type within the city without a permit from the city clerk.
(b) The city health officer and his authorized agents shall make an investigation to determine whether or not the person seeking a permit under this section has met all of the requirements of this article and all other health and sanitary ordinances of the city.
(c) Upon approval of the application for a permit under this section by the city health officer or his duly authorized agent, such approval shall be presented to the city clerk, who shall issue the permit. The cost of such permit shall be $1.00 per year and shall be paid on or before July 1 of each year.
(Code 1980, § 7-54)

Sec. 10-168. Distance from residences.
It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain or permit to be kept or maintained any fowl within 75 feet by air-line measurement of any residence or dwelling or place used for human habitation in the city, other than the dwelling of the owner of the person keeping and/or maintaining such fowl.
(Code 1980, § 7-55)

And the full city code list can be found here if he is unsure of anything else:

Thanks Scot. His neighborhood is too tightly compacted to allow him to have chickens. I double checked Sherwood to make sure. Under Ordinence 17 I can have them. Yay! Our neighbor asked about our chickens and she said as long as they are not loud she's cool with it. Our other neighbor hasn't said anything but he's also a code enforcer and so I bet he has already checked with the city. No robin hoods here.
