Arkansas folks speak up.........

Yep, he has to help them in the nest (you'd think the hens could manage that on their own, but you know how some are) then he has to call the others to come eat. Next he will be out to protect them from predators or fertilizing some eggs. A rooster's work is never done!!!

We have jumped in with both feet but I don't want to drown

. Yesterday we ordered 25 chicks thru 4H and now I need a list of what I need to buy so we are ready when they arrive in 1-2 months. My son looks likes this:

The chicks will have to stay in the storage shed until we can get the coop built since we have indoor cats. I can run power to it pretty easily so that won't be a problem. We are waiting on tax money to build the coop. Yes, I realize how large the coop and run will need to be.

Thank you!

Are these the 4H poultry chain chicks?

Um, I don't know. I guess so... What does that mean?? I forgot to warn you how new to this I am... I went to the county extension office and ordered them. I only knew it was time because one of our agents had to come out and show me how to trim the goat's hooves. While he was here my son asked about the chickens and he told us it was time to order. After talking to friends who did this a couple of years ago I just paid and left LOL. Son will be rejoining 4H as soon as we attend the next meeting. The last one was snowed out.

The 4H chicks are a sexlink commercial hybrid layer. You can show them at your county, district and the state fair. However, you can not show them at a Sanctioned poultry show. Last year deKalb donated the chicks. They were Bovan Browns. You should try to get him some purebred chickens or ducks for him to show. Many of us on here have some available at times. Have him look at http://www.ideal-poultry.com to choose a breed and/or variety he likes and we can help you find some.

We are having a Meetup on the 26th of February at 12 noon at Brown's Restaurant in Benton, Arkansas. There will be some nice birds there for sale afterwards at teh closed service station next door.
