I've been draining a hen with ascites. She seems her chipper, happy self after each draining.
I know this isn't a cure. I've read enough to realize what is inevitable.

My question...For those with experience, aside from obviously a living creature becoming unhappy or miserable suffering, (she's not at that point, yet)
What should I look for?
How about the amount I drain..what does it increase to?
Or how often to drain?
Weekly?
In 1 week, 130 mLs has accumulated...that's what's going on right now.

I've heard some hens get drained monthly, then more often as time goes on & more fluid accumulates.

She is a sweet EE, at least 6 yrs old.
I drained 100 mLs last night & 30 mLs tonight because I knew there was some left from last night, & I didn't want to drain too much at once.
I'm draining weekly...is that OK?
She doesn't even mind being drained. To her, it's another opportunity to be on my lap. Spice is such a sweet hen. ❤️

Just wondering if you can share your experiences. I know eventually she must be put down & I don't want her to suffer. She's been fine with her friends in the coop, even bossy with some young hens. I do have a hospital cage for her to get some peace as well, immediately after draining.

I've been in scenarios where I had to drain a very ill person's pleural area...the more fluid, more often, meant the end was approaching.

What amount & how often was your experience with this ascites chicken condition?
100 mLs seems like a lot to me. Is the end near?

Ok, thanks.

im really sorry to hear your hen has water belly, i dealt with a few of those cases and posted about it here

my hen seems to have made a full recovery, and is living a better life, maybe it can help you to:)
Thank you!

I have been draining her periodically. Also have been giving her vitamins & milk thistle for liver, co Q10 & omega oil for heart. She seems in good spirits so as long as she is, I will keep trying.

Thank you for sharing your remedy, I will try it!

The very 1st time I drained her, 130mls, the color fluid was green. When I looked up info, it said green indicates infection. I gave her Tylan injections into breast muscle & drainings thereafter have been pale yellow. But yesterday's draining of 50mls was yellow/tan. She remains in good spirits but I am concerned...hope I am doing right by this sweetie. The angel doesn't even move or flinch when I tend to her or inject, a perfect patient.

I have never extracted it because I'm really squeamish with needles but I believe tan is how it's supposed to look. sweet gal, she must trust you and understand that your helping. They tend to catch on to that really quickly. does it still fill up after draining?

Yes she is still filling, but not fast, and I'm not allowing it to accumulate & get huge. I don't want her to experience discomfort or respiratory distress.

The fact that she not filling fast is good, The fact that she is still filling is not tho, how long has she been on the treatment your doing? Thank you for caring for her so well. Besides that its usually a waiting game.
