I have 12 Bantam babies coming next week from MyPetChicken. I got Aspen bedding for their brooder because the "cut" seemed a little smaller than regular pine shavings (but it's still pretty large). And the bag says "no aromatic oils" which I thought was good. I also heard Aspen causes less dust. I was wondering if anyone else has used Aspen and how you liked it, and if it's suitable for bantams and their tiny feet. I do plan to cover the shavings with paper towels for the first couple days.

Thanks!

Though not bantams, I brooded my BO's on Aspen shavings. I even skipped the paper towels for the first few days, because the baby chicks were eating their starter crumbles out of my hand within minutes of being liberated from their shipping box. They clearly knew the food was food. They did pick up shavings and scratch them, but I saw no attempts to eat them. Later, I noticed that the aspen shavings tended to be larger than the pine shavings i saw at TSC, and had neglibible small particles. It may have been the size of the shavings that spared me the chore of changing paper towels.

The little girls are 2-1/2 weeks old, all are very healthy and (I think) happy. No pasty butt or other problems.

I LOVE the aspin shavings. I started with the pine but much prefer the aspin for the smell and they do seem less dusty.

I have them in my banty coop/tractor mixed with wood pellets.

Love the wood pellets as well because they too smell good and they obsorb the moisture from the poo drying it out within minutes.

With my banties, I only used the wood pellets in their brooder.

Good luck with your little ones. Be sure to post lots of pics.

Another vote for aspen shavings. I use them in my brooder for my standard girls, pleasant aroma, no problems at all.

Thankyou all, this was a bedding I had wondered about also! It seemed like it would be a nice bedding for my chicks, am going to start using for my week old EE's
