You're playing Denn.

By indicating a past time when democracy 'was not the norm for the world' you are implying that it now is. I'm suggesting that it is not unless you include single party voting systems.

I have nothing against people wanting democracy but the 'Arab Spring' states, by and large, do not except to the extent that it would put in power another group which then ensures that it stays in power.

So you're saying it's not the norm now and never should be. Or is it I have mine so screw them ? Before Israel were there any democracies in that region ?
Still don't see what you have against people trying.
Is more of the world democratic now then before ? What % of the world is democratic ? Is that to much for you ?

I have nothing against them trying but not many of them are trying. See how far they take democracy in Libya and Egypt, for example, and you'll understand my point. In fact, my main point is that it's not up to other countries to impose it on them, especially when it's for their benefit rather than that of the locals.

I am glad the French did not feel that way about the Colonists.

Have seen no credible reports of an assassination attempt.

And I don't see anything in the ATT that would infringe on my right to have guns.

She said in her speech that we cant decide for the people there what kind of government they want.

Not gonna say a lot, I'm just saying, this is the U.N. we're talking about. Anything that comes out of there is a bad idea. Even their freaking food distribution program is hopelessly corrupt. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find the text of the ATT anywhere, just vague summaries on the U.N. website. Do you by any chance have a link to the text? I'd be very grateful if you did.

As much as I want to avoid stereotyping an entire culture and people group, I have to say, I just don't think that the Islamic world is ready for freedom at this point, and trying to impose it at gunpoint is holding up progress that could be made. People get defensive about anything when a foreign nation tries to tell them they're doing something wrong, and spreading "democracy" at gunpoint is a really good way to make folks get defensive. Invasions only strengthen the fanatics and allow them to clamp down on the sane ones.

Not to mention the utter hypocrisy in that we prop up plenty of dictators as well (Saudi Arabia, anyone?), despite our devotion to "democracy." Israel can handle itself - especially if we stopped funding its enemies!

Listening to the news and this expert is talking about stricter gun control on who can get them. If they all seem normal and live daily lives like the man in this shooting you can not prevent that. Even if guns were illegal you can not prevent a shooting.

Are you assuming that 'freedom' equals 'democracy'? If your government happens to do what you want it to do, would you not see that as freedom? Democracy would create the risk of people with whom you disagree taking power. Would you then want democracy? What about a regime that allows anyone to seek the Presidency provided that he has millions of Dollars to fund his campaign? Is that democracy?
