Hatching

Sorry, nervous first-time "parent"!

So, I need to know how much to assist w a duck egg that pipped (externally) 19.5 hours ago. I just removed the shell, not that inner membrane, to the edge of where the air sac was (I had the foresight to draw that before the duck pipped). The ducking pipped in the wrong part of that air sac and so he didn't have the leverage he needed to break out; but I gave him time to progress on his own anyway...perhaps too much, so now I'm worried he'll be too exhausted to get out.

Will he be able to get out now? The blood vessels have receeded it seems, though I can detect whitish shadows where the veins were once filled. So please let me know how much help I should provide and when I should provide it. It's only been a half hour since I took that part of the shell away and I'm keeping it moist. Now that's 20 hours since he pipped. Okay for now?

I'm curious, why did you take off that shell this early? That will make the hatch much more difficult to pull off correctly. I don't understand what you mean by wrong part of the air cell.

Generally, it takes at least 24 hours to externally pip once they've internaled. I don't know when to assist once that's been done already, can't say I've ever done it.

@Ravynscroft ? @WVduckchick ? I apologise for bugging you, but I do not know what to do in this case.

What are you using to keep the membrane moist?...Do not use water as it actually dries out the membrane...Use a Q-Tip and a little Vaseline or cooking oil....Timing needs to be perfect to assist or the Duckling will bleed out....Not sure why to removed the shell?...It can take over 24 hours from external pip to actual zipping out/hatching...They rest lots as they absorb the yolk....

after they externally pip, they are still absorbing the yolk, as they do this, they are growing in size. eventually the shell will not hold them. they don't have to "push" the shell away..

I don't know where some people get the idea that they have to "help"..

I have had ducks diddle around for over 48 hours.
you have to learn patience if you are going to incubate and hatch eggs..

It all went well.

To answer ur question, @BantyChooks, I assisted bc (according to a prev forum), if, after pipping externally in the wrong place (again, another forum, but basically the little one's head is mis-positioned and won't be able to make his nice, neat circular cut that allows him to pop out), the chick hasn't progressed any further after 8 - 10 hours, an assist shud be used at this point. I waited until 19.5 hours to begin worrying because, while hatching an egg whose occupant is in the right position can take 24 hours, there's always forward progress. So I removed just the egg above the air sac (per another forum), checked his positioning (foot over wing over head and stuck), whether there were any live vessels or had they receded (they'd receded) and put him back in overnight to do the rest of the work himself.

It's a baby duckling!

And cruel mother I am, I put him back in the incubator to get the other two on the ball and hatched into the world. It's my understanding they can go without eating or drinking for over 24 hours?

yes, they CAN go that long without food or water,
but if it is available, often they will use it right away..
I have both in the brooder where I put them after they can be taken out of the bator..
It is plain to see that I was not on all of those other forums..

I was just asking for more information. No need to get snippy.

How's he doing now? Can you see where the bill is? If so, is he making a yawning motion? I'm still having trouble following where exactly the malpoed pip is, sorry about that. Is there any chance you could get a picture?

ETA: Wait, has he hatched? I really need more coffee, lol.

Why are you attacking us?.....You asked for help so we are trying to help.....I guess you no longer need it?.....
Best of luck....
