At 0350 in the morning

Yikes that sounds vile! If it were my dog she'd be sleeping outside.. at least then she could go whenever she needed to.. and the house would certainly smell better.

She can't sleep outside, never has. She has no meat left on her bones and has never been an outside dog in the first place due to her cold nature anyway. She is about 20 lbs lighter than her full weight now, poor old girl, skeletal even. I won't put her outside now.

She did sleep in the basement bathroom shower stall for awhile, but she can't go up and down the 13 steps as well as she used to due to her hip arthritis, plus she has minor cataracts which make it even more difficult. We do a decent job keeping up with it and she is a revered member of the family. As I said, we'll deal with it until either she passes on herself or we must make the decision for her.

Bless your old dog! I am glad she is spending her twilight years with such a loving family. When my old dog was at the end, she had inconinence, etc. We bought those special blankets that the pee can't go through and you can wash them and re-use them, works great, so do the rewashable diapers for dogs. I put links below.

We folded an old plastic shower curtain to protect the pine floors underneath. Heck, they need refinishing anyway. She's more important than some small inconveniences and she'll be gone soon enough. What is surprising is that she can still take off and run down the driveway and roam the property (inside the perimeter fence) and bounce around like she's happy as can be when she's out of her smaller fenced area outside the basement door. When Kes is gone, no more dogs, though. Can't afford to feed and vet another dog and we won't have one unless it's taken care of properly.

Thanks Speckledhen, I love reading your posts about chickens and being a newbie I have learned an aweful lot from you so far. Just read this post and I have to say I respect the respect you give the old girl. She deserves it! I took care of my mother's old dog after my mother had passed away. He was a great dog and when he got sick with diabetes which i recognized as a paramedic myself i gave him insulin shots for 2 years. My husband learned also to do it because I was on shift 24 hours. Very expensive by the way so I understand if people can not do it. My Vet told me that we did the best he has ever seen taking care of a diabetic dog because most just put them down for the inconvenience not the money. My mom was not an inconvience (cancer), why would I do that to him? He deserved respect for all the joy he gave my mother and us over his very short life. He finally had a stroke and was no longer a happy little guy and we gracefully (and oh so painfully) let him go with dignity. Thank you again for your caring heart for all those voiceless innocents who give unconditional love. Respectfully, Michelle

Thank you, Michelle, how sweet of you to say! We love Kes. She had a history, was found dumped on the side of the road as a puppy by a couple west of Atlanta. They took her home with them, but found their 16 year old small dog hated her, so they put her outside. They quickly realized she was not a good outside dog (she's petrified of thunderstorms, all loud noises, probably encountered those when she was on her own as a dumpee), so they relinquished her to the local Humane Society who had her living with foster moms and we found her at PetSmart adoption days.

I was looking for a second dog as a companion for my 3 year old boxer/retriever, Cody, and it had to be a special dog, as he was very territorial and smart. We adopted her-vet's best guess was she was about 8 months old at the time. She was as submissive and mild as Cody was dominant and in-your-face smart. They made the perfect pair until Cody died at the age of 12 about five years ago.

Awe, all the more reason she deserves your love, affection and companionship. We have always had rescue dogs and they are the best. I noticed you were in North GA. We have a home up there in Morganton where we hope to live full time in the next 5-10 years. We found a dumped Pomeranian on our property while up there one time and worked with a Blue Ridge Rescue group to find her a home. they were very nice but get soooo much of that I think they get overwhelmed. It took a little while for them to find a home but they did find a perfect place for her because she was 9. I could not keep her at the time. I had a small chihuahua/Maltese mix that was learning to get along with other dogs at the time and it was not going well. We have since adopted a Doberman found in the woods here in FL and my small one is getting along good with him now. Lots of work that was. None of them are quite sure of the new chicks though. :) I found someone to take my Barred Rock rooster that you confirmed was a roo on one of my posts and I thank you. They gave me two little barred rock chicks that I am pretty sure so far from learning from you are pullets. I will post a picture as soon as I can get a good one. They are about 4 days old and look like girls already now that I have learned but I will see what you think. Thanks again for everything.

Paulasb12, I feel for ya. I get up a 4am on work days ........ and at 4am on off days. There are 3 dogs and 3 cats who just don't 'get' the concept of weekends. I keep telling myself that at least it ensures that I get a jump on the chores...... nah - that really doesn't help.
I have developed the ability to cross the bedroom, the bathroom and the utility room - open the door and get back to bed without opening my eyes.

Sounds like Lucy, I have stopped worrying about her peeing on the carpets. The one in the kitchen is going to be replaced with wood flooring when the new kitchen goes in. The hall and sitting room carpets which are horrible red and a mucky grey colour will be replaced with nice aubergene coloured carpet as soon as she passes.

How interesting! My DH came home with a dumped Pom, too, about a year ago. So weird. Beautiful and obviously trained dog. He found a home for her with another woman who had stopped to help catch her, though she came right to him. My family raised AKC Dobes when I was a kid, so I love that breed. You should PM when you're in Morganton-I'm in Mineral Bluff so just the next town over from your home!

Strange, me and my dad also once found a dumped Pom. She was running like a mad man down an empty stretch of road, nothing but open country side and a few distant farm houses. No collar but very beautiful and obviously cared for at some point by somebody. We tried to find her owner with no luck and ended up finding her a good home for her with a neighbor since we owned cats which she had obviously never been around >.>...It just seems strange that people would dump these little people dependent dogs out in the country side >.<
