My vet did a test today for intestinal parasites for $30. Came out negative!! (i was warned, however, that tapeworms don't always show up on this particular test)

I suggest doing this first to see if you even need to worm your girls

Okay, so ONE MORE question about worming. It does take me a while to really get new concepts down.

I did see little red things in one poop this morning, I'm thinking it was either gapeworm or seeds they may have eaten. (It looked more like seeds, not moving, like a 1/4" grain of red rice, but maybe it's another type of parasite?)

Anyway, I'm prepared to order Valbazen from the Jeffers livestock place, but am I supposed to give an additional kind of wormer after the Valbazen? I thought you were supposed to give two wormers in succession. Of course, I'm hoping I only have to give Valbazen and be done with it for now.

Thank you and once I get this whole thing down it will be much easier in the future and I expect to have a lot less problems and stress.

And then I'll worry about what to do for mite prevention. But first things first.

Can you still eat the eggs after worming the hens with the meds that Dawg recomends??

There is a 14 day egg withdrawal with most wormers. There is wormer residue, however minute, in the eggs after worming. Toss the eggs in the garbage. There's a possibility that there could be a reaction to the wormer in the egg if someone is sensitive to it. Remember, wormers are poisons designed to paralyze or kill parasites. This is why there's a withdrawal period, so that the wormer has cleared their system.

If you have never wormed I would start with the wazine, then follow 10 days later with the Valbazen, throw the eggs away after both wormers for 2 weeks,
I would use sevin dust for the mites/lice, I have used DE for mites/lice and it does work for that but not for internal worms.

Thank you, Schellie!

I can get Wazine locally once the ag store gets it back in stock. I can order the Valbazen from jeffers (too bad they don't sell that locally too).

For mites, the ag store owner said she only uses DE in the coop. I like the non-toxic aspect of DE, and with no infestation that I can tell, I think I may stick with that. That Sevin dust scares me...

I may just get the hang of this yet. One of the confusing parts is that both ag store owners have downplayed the need for worming. The one I spoke with yesterday said she has never needed to de-worm. But I didn't ask if her chickens were free rangers, like mine are. The other ag store owner minimized the idea too.

WEIRD.

I don't think people think about it, I know I didn't when I first started freaked when I saw worms. But once you do it the first time it get easy. When you use the Waizen make sure it is the only water they can drink I penned mine up for 24 hours.

Food-grade DE should also help prevent internal worms, too, if you mix in their feed. About 2 to 2 1/2 lbs for 50 lbs feed.

***EASY WAY TO MEASURE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH***
1 sandwich-size Ziploc bag stuffed full of D.E. = 1/2 lb.

WOW Thanks for all the great responses!!!!!

I think I will try to yogurt and olive oil.

I really hope that it isnt worms, I dont want to have to give them those dewormers... agh! I will let yall know, the girls are running around the yard at the moment.
