ATTENTION NEWBIES TO INCUBATING

Hi Tim,

Have you been keeping record of your humidity settings throughout the process?... In the end, it will be interesting to know the average humidity value from days 1 to 18...

Cheers

Carlos,
I have been somewhat up and down on humidity depending on what they seemed they needed for the proper weight loss. I would say a real close average has been 40% though. That seems to be the normal for the post part for most people. Huge differences can be needed depending geographic locations and conditions though.

Kind of stoked right now...

Day 3, hatch 2. 8/8 embryos. May have to reduce humidity, because I can't see air cells. But, I am super stoked!

I'm freeking exhausted! I cleaned out both coops today and added to the compost pile. The deep litter method is great until the day arrives! lol I got the raised bed gardens ready and put in some pull beans. Since it is going to frost tonight, I stopped with just the beans for now.

Then I still had to weigh eggs. Here is the update. I am a little confused. Weights are all over the charts, but the average is good.

Looking good, Tim...

So, did you candle yet?... If you didn't and the non-fertile are still in there, that might explain the off values in some of them... I think.

Cheers

That's a good point. I don't think there will be any real difference in whether they are developing or not. I think porosity, thickness of egg shells, or thickness of the egg white will have more to do with weight loss than whether they develop but that's just me thinking. Hopefully you plan to leave them all in and do an eggtopsy afterwards to see if there is any correlation. I did a quick look and can't see any real difference in the initial weight of the individual egg to start with.

You also clearly show why you take an average instead of adjust it for each individual egg. There is no realistic way you could do that, not with those results. By taking the average you are probably doing the best for the largest number of the eggs.

Carlos,
I had said I was going to candle them, but after thinking about it, I have to do one or the other....weigh or candle. It takes about 6 or 7 minutes to weigh them. I just can't leave them out long enough to candle them all as well. Also, it will be pretty interesting to see what (if anything) the weight loss at each interval tells about the end result of each and every egg.

Here is a chart that ozexpat posted of a hatch he weighed and recorded. I have a little more hope for some of mine after seeing his chart. Look at his eggs 14 and 17. They had very little weight loos in the early stages, then a big jump later with a high percentage. The ones that did that hatched fine. It will really be interesting to see which of min are successful! I sure hope I have as good of end results as ozex did!

Here is his chart:
