ATTN: American Pit Bull owners.

One thing to keep in mind when buying any puppy is to FIND A GOOD BREEDER. Good dogs do not happen by accident, temperment is hereditary. As a dog groomer I have seen wonderful dogs from "bad breeds" like Chows, Pitts, Cane Corso's etc.. but also monsterous dogs from so called "safe breeds" like Goldens, Labs, and Collies. One of the worst bites I have gotten was from a Cocker Spaniel. While doing research on dog bite stats I found cases of people being killed by dog of such breeds as Westies, Beagels, and disturbingly enough, one faitality attributed to a Pomeranian who ate the face off an infant. A good beeder will have a waiting list for pups, and require you to spayd/neuter your puppy. A good breeder will want to interview you and your family to make sure you are suitable. What ever you do DO NOT BUY A PUPPY OUT OF THE PAPER. Any breeder worth their salt does not have to advertise for puppies, they are spoken fore before they are born. Also, anyone who shows their dogs is a real plus. Any dog that is calm enough to relax around all the noise and action of a show ring will fit well into an active family.

Hi Angie! Great dog! I was thinking you were a pit person....

I wish we would have had more time to talk Saturday.

Here is one of our fosters, Sierra. We think she is part pitty/lab.

Most people dont know that pits didnt even have a bad rep until the 1980s,they also dont have a locking jaw just a strong one, they were originally used on farms to herd cattle. Heres a pic of are 12 yo out with the turkeys he wont hurt anything he might hurt you with his tail when he wags it so hard.

We had an American Bulldog for her whole life and she was the BEST dog ever. Died about 2 years ago at 10. We then adopted a "pit mix" 1 year old, still the sweetest dog despite the past issues. We also have 2 other dogs and the lab picks on the pit. Bad thing, the pit would love to eat the chickens.

I have friends that have pitt bulls and to be honest, if I was to choose a dog, it would be one of these (I am not a dog person either). Like with any dog, they are only as smart as their owners, if their owners cant be consistant, they should not own any dog. All dogs can bite, all dogs can fight for their land and territory, but, not all dogs (some will disagree with me) are as easy to train, smart and commical.
I had taught my friends puppy key words for my use, ENOUGH was one, because I love to "rough" up a puppy, get them playing, Sebastian never bit, would "grab" ahold of my wrists and growl, but when he would get to rough, I'd say Enough, that was it, he would lay down beside me, head on my lap and not budge.
That was even as a puppy, continued until he was 7 when he got out of his house- yes, they are smart, he would turn the door knobs and let himself out! but he was hit by a car while crossing the road to the woods to do his business.
That is where they always took him to go potty.
Good luck, I do not blame your mom for wanting a puppy for you to raise, socialize your pitt bull, exercise him everyday, don't let him get bored and give him all the love you can because he will be yours for as long as he lives.
(I agree with your mom on not adopting one, these dogs can have bad habits and you never know what idiot owned it prior to. Sad reason not to adopt)
Much luck and enjoyment to you on your potential new puppy! It WILL be worth it.

I tried to send you a PM, but your inbox is full.

This is my daughter Taylors pit mix Cindy, she was her b-day present. She came from a accidently breeding of a former street dog turned family dof and a unknown daddy that jumped the fence.
she never runs away and follows close behind, they are the perfect size (she will be around 45lbs)
Having worked with pits and like in a shelter in germany i have to say i never met a bad one. However i got bitten by schnauzers, poodles and german shepards. Pits def. need good training they can be dominant. Other than that they are very loyal.
My bil has a huge mastiff bull dog mix named cledus. The laziest dog alive, wont run just moves to pee and for food. but let it turn night and there is the perfect guard dog.

Here is Haze, we just got her a few days ago. Sweetheart. She is Bullmastiff (dad) and Staffordshire Terrier (mom)

The best I can do for you is tell you that we have a half pit/lab and she is the most gentle dog we have ever had. Be mindful though. We just had our homeowners insurance involuntarily cancelled d/t the fact that we have a dobe and had a half dobe/rott mix that we recently put down. Only mistake I made was being honest when they asked me what kind of dogs we owned. Not if they were agressive or had bit anyone (which they are not and havent), only that we had them! As soon as the new insurance kicks in in Aug (thats when the old one gets cancelled), I will write them a "nice" letter telling them that I will make sure that everyone I know will hear about this BS. The new ins co only asked if we have had a claim for dogbite in the last 3 years. (Have never had a claim for such in my lifetime). So....when it comes time for mom to renew, and if they ask, I would say "we have a mixed breed dog of unknown origin". Hope this helps you and your mom!

Very cute pictures. If you do get a pit bull, you need to be the pack leader, and socialize it, and train it from the day you get it. As with all bully breeds, and protection breeds, they need strict training. You cant let them get away with anything.
