Attracting crows for protection

I fed crows for years at my last home but they only hung around until the goodies were gone and then took off looking for goodies elsewhere so I never saw the potential for them to help alert or run off predators but if it's working for you, keep at it!

BTW...crows are my favorite wild bird. Fascinating to watch due to their intelligence!

I give my girls a little bread in the morning and the crows come for scraps. This did encourage them to nest nearby. Also you DO have to learn crowese and know the difference between social caws, warning caws, and all the noise they make when they're feeding their babies.
Hawks don't provide much protection for chickens, but they do provide a good early warning system. The chicken keeper must develop an ear for crow racket and be Johnny on the spot when crows alert. The idea is to help repel the hawks as well as rescue any chickens targeted by the raptors..

my crows and blue jays died off when west nile went through a few years ago.. the jays are back and they harass the hawks.. the jays roost near the poultry yard but I haven't seen them in the yard....
only wild bird I have seen looking for feed in the yard are cardinals.. but I only feed what the poultry eat in 20 min 2x a day...
the chickens eat any mice they can catch... lots of ground squirrels though.. I thought the turkeys would get them, but they ignore the ground squirrels
